I am looking to set up a new production CRM server. I have two VM's ( Windows 2016 ) which are hosted.
Initially I need advice on setting up the CRM server as although I have set up a development one previously, it hasn't been without it problems.
VM1 will host the CRM server and VM2 the SQL (2017 ) database
The CRM Server will need to be able to send and receive emails from office 365 on-line ( I believe there is a connector ), so I'm presuming the CRM will need to be configured with IFD
Also there are plans to develop and use a customer portal and an internal portal
I am the administrator on the system, and the initial setting up of the CRM server and the SQL server don't pose to many issues, its the IFD that I get confused with. Bearing in mind I only have the two VM's to operate on, and things have changed since I last set up an IFD ( and that took weeks of headaches), I believe that now the way things are set up have changed. This is where I am looking for most help, in what, how and where to set it up.
Any advice or a 'dummies' guide would be most helpful

I have the same question (0)First off, you're going to need an ADFS (Active Directory Federation Services) server separate from your two VMs for CRM and SQL. And this server is either going to have to be in the perimeter of your DMZ, or it's going to have to have a perimeter server for outside access.
Then you're going to have to get certificates for your ADFS server and your CRM front-end server. A wildcard will do, as long as you configure your DNS to route to them correctly. Self-signed will not do.
That's a starting point. Here's a deeper guide: www.interactivewebs.com/.../how-to-set-up-microsoft-crm-2016-ifd-on-windows-2012-r2-server The short answer, it's still not easy.
