I'm trying to figure out the appropriate place in CRM to denote a company's competitor. I know that there is a section called "Competitors" on the account form which you can use but you can also create a "Connection" between the account and competitor. Which of these options are best practice?

    Hi Ashley,

If the competitors are likely to be in your database as Accounts, then the Connections may be the best choice because then you can link an Account to one or more other Accounts with the role of Competitor.  If there is no reason for them to be in your CRM as Accounts, then you might want to consider an alternative solution such a text field on the Account--it just depends on what the use cases are for the competitor data. Do you need to report on it?  Or is it educational only?

As you probably know, the out-of-the-box Competitors entity is designed to track YOUR competitors, not the customers.  So, this probably isn't a good solution.

    Hi Gretchen,

Our competitors live under "Competitors" not accounts. We like to tie their customers, which live in accounts to them. We do report on this quite often. We're just not sure of the best place to tie them together. Whether it's through connections or with the "competitors" button on the account form. Do you know which is better?

    Hi Ashley,

I am not aware of the competitors button on the Account form.  Is this something your company may have created?  But yes, Connections sounds like a great way to tie your Accounts to your competitors.  You could even track additional data about the relationship such as the start date/end date of the relationship.  If you close an Opportunity as lost to a competitor, then create a Connection with that competitor. Lots of fun!
