Printer and Cash Drawer randomly not working

The problem we are experiencing is with a new RMS install that the cash drawer just randomly quits working- The following is a brief history of what has happened thus far-

Purchased a Dell Opti Plex 390 - Windows 7 pro

Installed a PCI Express Parallel adapter card for the Epson TM-T88IIP

Installed Driver for Express Adapter

Instaleld all windows updates

Installed Microsoft RMS

Installed Service Pack 1

Installed (Hot fix?) 4

Installed SQL 2008 Upgrade

Purchased License Key for RMS

Created Database using Backup from another Database

Installed Epson OPOS

Using Epson OPOS created a printer driver - Created using the Epson TM-T88IIP Port 3 - When I originally installed the card it was ported on slot 3 but the OPOS did not offer port 3 as an option so I had to go in and expand the range to include port 3.

Created a Cash Drawer driver using the same port (Cash drawer plugs into the back of the Epson via telephone cord) - Installed a StandardP drawer using port three being used by TM-T88IIP

Everything worked fine- Except randomly the cash drawer will not kick and the printer will not function.

Sometimes the drawer would not open, but the printer would print. Sometimes the drawer would not open and the printer would not print.

Tried every scenario to try and find a pattern could not find a pattern that would allow me to emulate the problem at will.

The fix for the problem differed from time to time. The following are some of the things that would cure the problem.

Logging out then back in.

Totally restarting RMS

Reboot PC

Restart printer - log out - log back in -

Whenever the problem occurs, I could go into OPOS and kick the drawer with a Health check- but sometimes it didn't even work there.

Another part of this is at another location I setup 4 other computers exactly the same way (my memory says so anyway) and I have had no problems with those thus far. Part of that may be that they do not get as much traffic as that one stand alone- I will go put more traffic on the other installs and see if I can get them to break.

I have installed, uninstalled, and reinstalled everything I could possibly think of- I even switched out hardware (printer Cash Drawer) and was still able to generate errors.

This is a stand alone install no other computers access it.

I would appreciate any input or ideas.

Hi....you are not alone....this is an obscure issue with an obscure cause....we moved to rms on 70 tills 2 years ago. The previous epos softtware worked fine with the hardware ....as soon as we installed rms we started to get the same issue you have on about 20% of the tills.....

We tried everything that you have tried......eventually through trial and error I found the solution....

Rms sends two commands to the receipt printer...one to print the receipt and the other to kick open the cash drawer....the time between these two signals is much shortter than some other epos software... So the cause ?

...it's the printer power supply...if your power supply is more tan a few months or few years old it's fallen below optimum power output and the end result that it can't cope with the electric current requirement to kick the drawer so soon after the receipt print request.....

Replace your printer power supply !... Believe me , this was a headache for us but replacing the power supply soved the problem in every case....I would be surprised if your issue wasn't the same...

Next time buy a real printer, Star Micronics! ;-)

Parallel is going away on new machines as you've found out. Buy USB or a network interface
