Option to select Allocation Account for multiple G/L entries in Recurring General Journal?

Hi everyone,

In Business Central, we know that for a G/L account, we can assign an Allocation Account No. to automatically distribute amounts based on dimension rules or account allocations.

I’m trying to check if there’s any similar functionality available while using the Recurring General Journal. For example:

  1. Can we assign or predefine an allocation setup that applies to multiple lines/entries in the recurring journal?
  2. Is there a way to automatically trigger allocation (like how it happens in a General Journal with allocation account) when we post the recurring journal entries?
  3. Or is it necessary to manually apply allocation for each entry or use the "Allocation" action line by line?

Any suggestions, setups, or extensions that help handle allocation efficiently for recurring entries would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, the Recurring General Journal does indeed support allocation functionalities, although it may require some manual setup compared to the automatic allocation features available in standard General Journals. Here are the key points regarding allocations in the Recurring General Journal:

Allocation Setup: You can set up allocations in the Recurring General Journal, but it is not as automated as in the General Journal with an Allocation Account No. You will need to manually define the allocation for each line or use the "Allocation" action for each entry. This means that while you can create a recurring journal entry, the allocation must be specified for each line item unless you have a predefined setup that you replicate across entries.

Using Dimensions: When creating a recurring journal entry, you can allocate amounts to multiple dimensions. This is done by specifying the dimension codes for each line in the journal. You can set up dimension filters to allocate amounts based on specific criteria, but this setup will need to be done for each line unless you have a consistent pattern that can be reused.

Manual vs. Automatic Allocation: Currently, there is no built-in feature that automatically triggers allocations for all lines in a recurring journal entry in the same way as the General Journal. Each line will require its allocation to be defined, which can be cumbersome if you have many entries to process.

Recurring Frequency: You can set the recurring frequency for the journal entries, which allows you to automate the posting of these entries at specified intervals (e.g., monthly). However, the allocation setup will still need to be addressed for each entry.

Extensions and Custom Solutions: If you find the manual allocation process cumbersome, you might consider looking for extensions in AppSource that enhance allocation functionalities or allow for more automated processes. Custom development could also be an option if your organization has specific needs that are not met by the standard functionalities.

In summary, while you can use the Recurring General Journal for allocations, it requires manual setup for each line, and there is no automatic allocation feature akin to that found in General Journals. For efficiency, consider exploring extensions or custom solutions that may streamline this process

    Hi
As our colleague Yun points out, it's not part of the native solution. In addition to proposing an idea, you could consider developing an alternative solution, or alternatively, consider working with a standard general journal.

    Hello,

Recurring general journals support allocation functionality, but it's not as automated as with Allocation Account No. in standard journals.

You can define allocations per journal line using the "Allocations" action, allowing amounts to be distributed across accounts and dimensions based on predefined rules. These allocations are applied automatically during posting, but must be set up individually for each line.

To streamline this, you can use journal batch templates or consider custom extensions for broader allocation control across multiple entries.

    Hi Padmavathy,

In standard Business Central, Recurring General Journals do not automatically apply Allocation Accounts the way General Journals do. The allocation logic doesn’t trigger automatically on recurring entries. So yes, at the moment:

You would need to use the "Allocations" action manually per line to distribute the amounts.

There's no direct setup to automate allocation across multiple lines in the Recurring General Journal.

If this is a frequent need, a customization or extension could streamline this — for example, adding logic to apply predefined allocation templates when the journal is posted.
