Is it possible to have a vendor posting group in in hierarchy? I have created a posting group, but I would like to have it in layers
Like, have the first layer as Utility>Gas> Electricity

Currently, I have created like Utility, but this can be any utility, so I would like to define this in hierarchy order
I have the same question (0)

    Hello @JG-03022254-0,

In Business Central, Vendor Posting Groups do not support hierarchical or layered structures natively. They are flat classifications used to map vendors to specific G/L accounts. If you want to categorize expenses like Utility > Gas > Electricity, consider using additional dimensions alongside the Vendor Posting Group or else you can create structured Chart of Accounts to manage structure hierarchy. This will help you to get detailed reporting and grouping without altering the posting group structure.

Hope this answer will help you!

Thank you @Mansi Soni , for your reply to my post. Please, can you explain how I can achieve this on a dimension level? I am not familiar with how to do this.

    Thanks!

    Hello,

You can create a dimension (e.g., Utility Type) with values like UTIL-GAS and UTIL-ELEC, and assign these to vendors or G/L accounts as default dimensions. During purchases, these dimensions get posted with transactions, allowing detailed reporting and analysis without altering posting groups or duplicating G/L accounts. Use reports like Trial Balance by Dimension or Financial Reporting for analysis.

Hope this answer will help you to proceed further!

Do let me know if you still have any queries..

    Regards,
    Mansi Soni

Business Central doesn’t support layered Vendor Posting Groups, but you can achieve this structure using Global or Shortcut Dimensions. Here's how:

✅ Steps to Set Up Dimensions for Utility Categories:

    1. Go to Dimensions
Search for Dimensions and create a new one (e.g., UTILITYTYPE).

    2. Create Dimension Values
Under that dimension, create values like:

    UTILITY

    UTILITY-GAS

    UTILITY-ELECTRICITY

    UTILITY-WATER

You can structure them using a code format like:

    Code: UTILITY
    Code: UTILITY.GAS
    Code: UTILITY.ELEC

    3. Assign to Vendors
Go to the Vendor Card, and under Dimensions (or Default Dimensions), assign the appropriate utility dimension value to each vendor.

    4. Use in Transactions
When you post purchase documents or journals, the system will pick up the dimension automatically based on the vendor.

    5. Reporting
Use Account Schedules, Analysis Views, or Power BI to report by these dimension levels.

This gives you detailed control and reporting  all while keeping your Vendor Posting Groups clean and flat.

    Hello,

You could configure dimensions to determine a vendor posting group with different dimensions or analytics. For Example:

The accounting information could be determined in a single account, but through the dimension analytics you could have more control.

    I hope you can help.

    Regards,

Adding to below. If standard dimension don't solve your requirement. You can search for Apps on appsource. Its has some good apps where you build next level dimensions logic.

Posting group used if you have different GL account for different line of Business

    Thanks

    Hi
I think it's best to use dimensions (such as a dimension called "Vendor Type" or "Spend Category"). You can then use these dimensions in your reports, financial analyses, or Power BI to get a hierarchical view of your data.

Hi, I think you can also set different GL accounts.
Then set different totals in Financial Reports.
    For example,

    Hope this helps.
    Thanks.
