how to spot a fake bank statement

Posted on by

Spotting a fake bank statement requires attention to detail. Here are key signs to look for:

1. Formatting and Design Issues

  • Inconsistent Fonts & Spacing – Banks use standardized fonts; mismatched fonts or irregular spacing are red flags.
  • Poor Quality Logo – Genuine bank statements have high-quality, properly aligned logos. Fake ones may look pixelated or stretched.
  • Misaligned Text – Numbers and text should be perfectly aligned, especially in tables and balances.

2. Incorrect or Mismatched Information

  • Bank Details Don’t Match – Verify the bank’s official name, website, and contact details.
  • Strange Account Numbers – Most banks follow a consistent format for account numbers.
  • Inconsistent Dates – Check if transactions align with the statement period and previous balances.

3. Unrealistic Transactions & Balances

  • Round Figures Only – Genuine statements often have decimals and varied amounts, not just rounded figures.
  • Unrealistic Deposits – Large deposits appearing without an employer name or transfer details can be suspicious.
  • Negative Balances – Many banks don’t allow accounts to go negative without fees, so be wary of large negative balances.

4. Editing & Tampering Signs

  • Blurry or Pixelated Text – Scanned or altered statements may show uneven text quality.
  • Different Font Sizes – Edits might be noticeable in transaction amounts or balances.
  • Modified PDF Properties – Check file metadata to see if the document was edited recently.

5. Verify with the Bank

  • Call the Bank Directly – Use the official contact details from the bank’s website, not from the document.
  • Request an Original Copy – Ask for an original PDF or printed version directly from the bank.
  • Cross-check Transactions – If possible, verify transactions through online banking
