Business Central, when it comes to Capacity Planning, applies an infinite capacity, even if you setup the Work Center with Capacity and Efficiency. These 2 fields help calculate the available hours in the Calendar for the Work Center. So what this all means is if you want to do a nice capacity planning with your Business Central Solution, you might want to take some other apps into account as well.
We do have some assumptions though that you need to take into account. First of all, let’s look quickly at the capacity load report (the report that shows how much our capacities are loaded). You get an overview of all my capacities per week that you set in the capacities work center. What’s actually there. You can see the needed capacity. What is actually booked, and you can see what is available in the period.
You can see where Work Centers/Machine Centers are overbooked. This means we’re booked with infinite capacity, meaning you can do more than a 100% capacities if you have in place many production orders at the same time, the capacity percentage or the capacity load will just increase. When you create the Production Order it will automatically make routing lines related to the production order line and create capacity with no evaluation to already scheduled orders and allocated those capacities.
So these are the entries that actually sums up and is used in the report, I mentioned earlier. Even if you use shifts, hours will be allocated and see the allocated time in minutes, per shift. So this capacity is calculated/allocated, in the load report, and those entries can also be used to calculate using many other tools to see your capacity set up.
You know you can re-plan Production Orders, based on this load problem. My setup, with a test Released Production Order of Qty=10, shows the following. It shows it finishing almost instantly.

So what you really need if you want to do capacity planning is an overview tool to see when your work centers are overloaded and then you can move them either manually or with an APP. There are great ones out their like Stock IQ or Netronics.
Hope this helps.
Thanks,
Steve
