Creating a 'simple' Parallel Routing

(0) ShareShare

Hi All,

I'm trying to create a simple 3 line parallel run Routing using 3 Work centres which should all start and finish at the same time. I've read that in order to achieve this i have to create a single op or a  'fake' start and end entry and then parallel run the 3 Work centres.

'The routing have to start and end with single operations, otherwise you would get an error message when you try to certify the routing.'

However this wont work as when trying to run multiple production runs the end time just forces the timings to be incorrect. I just need the 3 Work centres to just run at the same time  - is this possible? I've tried numerous ways and either BC will error or it just auto populates the Previous/next operation no's)

TIA.

I have the same question (0)

    Hello,

When setting up a Parallel Routing, make sure you start with a single Operation that commences the Parallel process. Below is my example. Then make sure you populate the Next and Previous Operation No.'s.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Steve,

Thanks for your reply. This is also how we currently have set up our routing. However the problem we have is although the 3 WC's are running in parallel and have correct timings, the final operation causes the timings to far exceed those expected.

What i mean by this is we have multiple prod running at any one time and so the 3 parallel WC's will run based on the WC's load capacity remaining. However the final parallel run has 0 mins against it and so if the requested delivery date is say 01/04, the 3 parallel runs maybe running on the 28/03 (as the 29th - 31st already have full capacity), then, as the expected delivery date is the 01/04, the final parallel runs @ 11.59pm on the 31/03 ready for the 01/04. This results in prod the order the start time is 28/03 >> 31/03, when actually we need to show just the 3 parallel run timings so prod run start/finish on the 28/03.

The only way i can see to amend the timings is to open the routing line entries and then copy the end time, go back to the order and paste this into the end field on the prod order, this then updates the final parallel run time to match the other 3 WC's >> but a). this would need to be actioned for every order and its risky as it means manually changing the production run times.

    Thanks

    Hello,

Business Central, when it comes to Capacity Planning, applies an infinite capacity, even if you setup the Work Center with Capacity and Efficiency. These 2 fields help calculate the available hours in the Calendar for the Work Center. So what this all means is if you want to do a nice capacity planning with your Business Central Solution, you might want to take some other apps into account as well.

We do have some assumptions though that you need to take into account. First of all, let’s look quickly at the capacity load report (the report that shows how much our capacities are loaded). You get an overview of all my capacities per week that you set in the capacities work center. What’s actually there. You can see the needed capacity. What is actually booked, and you can see what is available in the period.

You can see where Work Centers/Machine Centers are overbooked. This means we’re booked with infinite capacity, meaning you can do more than a 100% capacities if you have in place many production orders at the same time, the capacity percentage or the capacity load will just increase. When you create the Production Order it will automatically make routing lines related to the production order line and create capacity with no evaluation to already scheduled orders and allocated those capacities.

So these are the entries that actually sums up and is used in the report, I mentioned earlier. Even if you use shifts, hours will be allocated and see the allocated time in minutes, per shift. So this capacity is calculated/allocated, in the load report, and those entries can also be used to calculate using many other tools to see your capacity set up.

You know you can re-plan Production Orders, based on this load problem. My setup, with a test Released Production Order of Qty=10, shows the following. It shows it finishing almost instantly.

So what you really need if you want to do capacity planning is an overview tool to see when your work centers are overloaded and then you can move them either manually or with an APP. There are great ones out their like Stock IQ or Netronics.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks,

    Steve

    Hi Steve,

Thanks for your response again. I initially noticed that we had unlimited capacity, which again wouldn't work for us, so i had already set max capacity as 100 for all WC's. We also were looking at the WC'S load to understand when capacity was being used, again this was all looking correct. The issue we had was, as i mentioned above, that the timings shown on the actual prod order was not really showing us the timings we really needed at a glace, and we would need to open the routing entries and check from here.

We actually think we may have solved this issue now. Rather than using the 'fake' parallel run at the end, we have swapped this for one of the previous WC's in the Routing, this still add's this as an additional load onto the end of the planning but rather than using the last few secs of the shop cal. (which as i mentioned could be hours/days after the other WCs had finished), this now aligns the timing so prod starts and finishes at the correct times.

So in your example screenshot , swapping the final 'Packing dept' line for either a second 'machine/Assembly/Painting' should give you correct results (as long as the same shop calendar is being used)

    Thanks

If I have understood it right you can try using "Capacity Constrained Resources" to implement limited capacity

    Hello,

On the Work Center, you can apply Capacity Constrained Resources for the Work or Machine Centers.

    Hello,

Does anyone knows why first operations can not be parallel operations?

Has anyone tempered with this check and allowed it? What would be the implications of skipping this check later on one Production order?

    Thank you.

    Best regards,

    Hello,

I am trying to create a simple parallel routing with 2 operations to start the same time, but the offered scenario is not working in my case.
Can you please advise how can have 2 operation start at the same time?
