Port 80 used by credit card authorizations - why?

I have a client who is using RMS 2.0 Feature Pack 2. They have been using RMS for several years, and have four retail stores.

Recently, they experienced problems with credit card authorizations at most of their stores. Over the course of four days, three of the stores received a connection error when attempting to process a CC transaction.

Their IT department was able to determine that during the cc transaction, RMS was trying to access Akamai IPs (an Internet content delivery network ) on port 80.

My question is, why would RMS need to access anything on port 80 (an unsecure port) when doing a cc transaction?

It’s been so long since RMS was initially installed, I can’t recall anything we would have done to open up port 80 for credit cards.

I did a search online regarding this, and all I found was a post from another RMS user from 2010 reporting a similar issue (credit cards trying to access port 80), with no resolution listed.

Any information would be helpful.

They don't use debit cards, just Visa, MasterCard, and Amex.

You do bring up a good point. It's encrypted data going to an https site. If that meets PCI compliance (and I know RMS has been certified as compliant), I don't think it should be an issue.

In this case, it's more to give my client's IT security guy some peace of mind. He wants to know why we are sending that data through port 80. He's opened up that port (must have closed it at some point in the past week) and the credit card transactions are authorizing fine now.

I think he (and I) are looking for something from Microsoft that states that port needs to be open, and their assurance that no unencrypted data will be passed over the net.

    Thanks,

Dunno, its an encrytped transmission going to a specifc https website.  Does it really matter what port?

You can change the port for debit cards in the EDC setup
