In the CRM Appointments entity, what's the difference between the Actual Start Date and the Created On date?

When I manually create a new Appointment, the Actual Start Date field is populated with the current system date, as is the Created On date. When I use a Work Flow to create an Appointment, everything in the new Appointment seems to be set up correctly, but the Actual Start Date is blank, even though the Created On date field is populated. I'm seeing this when I do Advanced Finds and display those columns in the report. I found this issue when I was creating another Work Flow and keyed on the Actual Start Date, but it failed because some of the appointments had blank Actual Start Date fields.

What I think about the created on and actual start date is the following:

    - Created on is the data when the appointment is created in the dynamics crm system

    - Actual Start date is when the appointment will actually start.

For instance I'm creating an appointment with Joe for 20/06/2011 today in my crm system.

The created on date will be today and I'll need to adjust the actual start date to 20/06/2011

It doesn't seem to work that way. I've identified 7 date fields in CRM appointments:

    1. Record Created On-  Not used in our implementation
    2. Created On- the Date the record was created
    3. Actual Start- the Date and Time the record was created
    4. Start Time- the Date and Time the actual Appointment is scheduled to begin
    5. End Time-  the Date and Time the actual Appointment is scheduled to end
    6. Modified on- the Date the most recent edit was made to the record
    7. Actual End- the Date and Time the record was closed as Completed

So, I guess I've answered part of my original question. The difference between Created On and Actual Start is that one is the Date and the other has both the Date and Time that the appointment was created.

The unanswered part of my question is: Why is the Actual Start field populated when I manually create a New Appointment, but it DOESN'T get populated when the appointment is created using a Work Flow.

    That's also something I can't answer.

What I was thinking though...couldn't it be that the "Actual Start" and "Actual End" are there for you to update later regardless of what the start and end date was. Just for statistics or something.

Hopefulle someone else can give some more input

I believe that the Actual Start and Actual End are system-generated. The Start Time and End Time are editable and, as a matter of good practice, should be adjusted to reflect the correct beginning and ending time of the meeting before the Appointment is marked as Completed. Other than the Start Time and End Time fields, I don't believe any of these fields are user-changeable.
