Yes you can, as long as the laptop meets the minimum requirements for the application you can have it in the laptop
ive been trying but its asking for sql server during installation. if i choose not to create data source how will configure it in the gp utility.
Jose, are you connecting to a server later to use GP or you want to have your own GP installation on that laptop without accessing data on a server?
If you choose not to create data source, no problem!!!! after you install when launching utilities or Dynamics GP it will allow you to select from the ODBC connections you have setup in your system for SQL server
Is there a specific guide for dummies to do this. i am dying to learn microsoft dynamics? you were mentioning about odbc connections, could you help me on simple terms on how to do this in sql server.
I will only intend to use it on a standalone computer. i wont need to access from an outside server.
Sure!! in fact I will recommend you the book Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010 Implementation by Victoria Yudin one of the mega stars of Dynamics GP world.
Its a book that will guide you thru the installation in's and outs for Dynamics GP.
I will recommend you download SQL server Express with advanced tools from microsoft, and install one instance of SQL then install your GP in your laptop and use your laptop SQL server instance to configure your GP.
Its a good way to learn by actually doing the job but also Dynamics GP has documents in partnersource that will guide you thru installation.
I already have installed sql server express 2005 and created an instance named as "DYNAMICS". so how will i configure after installing GP? thanks for your kind replies.
ok, if you have done so, then go to your control panel and open up ODBC connections (could be under Administrative Tools) and setup a SYSTEM DSN for your Dynamics Instance, by using Mixed Mode Authentication, then install your GP, if you choose to have GP create the data source go ahead just tell on the install the name of your instance like COMPUTER\SQLINSTANCE if not then do not create the odbc and proceed with install at the moment of launching GP or utilities your ODBC connection will be available on the server drop down /login window and you will be able to configure it by using the wizards
Yes, you can install it on a standalone laptop. The installation procedure is the same as if you were sitting at a server and installing it.
One other tid-bit. I read through the posts quickly, so it may already have been mentioned. If your machine is a 64-bit machine, you need to use the 32-bit ODBC because Dynamics is a 32-bit application. To find the 32-bit ODBC program you need to go to the SYSWOW (SYSWOW64?) folder in your windows folder and run the odbc32.exe application and then create the system DSN as described above. There is a KB out on how to do this.
Search the community, I know the KB has been included in another thread.
Kind regards,
Leslie
