Managed vs. Unmanaged Objects in a Solution

(0) ShareShare

I am reviewing All "Component Type" in a Solution. There are some "Managed" and some are "Unmanaged" objects.  I am assuming "Unmanaged" object are custom to our CRM environment and "Managed" objects are CRM system's objects but would like to confirm with the forum.

Could someone please confirm or explain?

    Hello MSQ;

    Essentially there are lots of out of the box entities that Microsoft provides that aren't customizable; these show as managed. When you think about it think of uncompilled source code vs compiled source code.

    When you have a solution for your customization you have the ability to export as unmanaged or managed. A lot of time you only move managed to your test & production environments ensuring that no one changes core elements of your customization's in that environment.

    So, the existence of an entry in a solution means there is customization present in CRM. Right?

    Not guarteed. If you look at the publisher it has a prefix by default it's "new"; this means if you were to go look at the list of entties inside of your solution if there is any that has this prefix like "new_entity" it would be a custom entity. The same thing goes for fields. If you expanded the entity in your solution and looked at the fields if there is any that have the prefix it's custom "new_fieldname".

    Does this make sense MSQ?

    I am still not clear on it...

    I selected "Components" in the left pane which displays all components in the right pane.  The 3rd column in the right pane is named "Type".  I do not see any entry with "New"  in any of the 3-page list. I expanded "Entities" but did not find any items under Entities listed as "New" or "new"

    Hi MSQ

    Component or Field Names that begin with a prefix, this is normally new_ but it could be slightly different prefix, such a field that has a managed component will mean that the Managed component options will be enforced when its exported as a Managed Solution, so that it cannot be edited by the end user.

    You will find that default System components will have managed components, however the actual managed components options need to be set for the behavior to take into effect for the managed solution. This is to help preserve the core components from being owned by another managed solution.

    I hope this help to make sense?

    Best Wishes, Raz
