Dynamics 365 development what is the correct path?

Hi all

Things seem to be moving fast in the world or Power Apps and Dataverse but is creating model driven apps with low/no code tools the only path?

I'm researching viability of a new project utilizing Dynamics 365 Sales. We have an Azure SQL DB and want to expose some of that data into our customers Dynamics 365 Sales applications plus add other functionality.

I have created a hello world app in Dynamics 365 Business Central using Visual Studio Code and I'm also reading about using asp.net and the Dataverse API.

What options are there for extending the functionality within Dynamics? Is everything moving towards Power Apps only?
