Firming Planned order "A valid BOM version cannot be found for the phantom BOM line"

(0) ShareShare

Posted on by 20

Hi all,

I created a planned order for the item which has BOM with phantom item.

When firming the planned order, the following error occurred.

"Cannot estimate production for item number XXX.  A valid BOM version cannot be found for the phantom BOM line item number XXX".

The item's BOM Line type is Phantom and Order type in default order setting is Purchase order.

From now on,  I tried to fix this problem, but I don't have no idea and solution for it.

Are there any information to solve this problem?

Best regards,

Yuka

(The message seems clear a Phantom, is by definition a Phantom BoM, so it must have an active BoM.

Have you created a BoM for the phantom itself?

If so then is it Approved and Activated?

Is the effectivity  date still valid?

Is there a quantity range on the version?.

Is the phantom  BOM activated only for a specific site or company?

I am not at all  clear why you would set the order type to Purchase for a phantom. but as you are by definition not  going to make or buy I guess it does not matter but logically a BOM and thus also a  Phantom  is something that has underlying  components but if it purchased then you would just buy the made up items and not need to list the components.

There is a checkbox for Phantom on the item but this is only a default for its use on a BOM.

(Before 2012, planned orders for phantoms did not exist and but were up in the MRP explosion tree as (dynamic), indicating that there is  not really an order, though its component demands are  part of the complete explosion.

In AX 2012, there is a planned order with a checkbox “directly derived” checked but no obvious other signs that this is not a planned order if you do try to firm it (which makes no sense)  then you will get an error message. )

    Hi magic,

    Thank you for your advice.

I checked your check points and tried to solve this problem again.

As a result, I could solve this problem by setting the followings.

    1. set the item as "Phantom" in BOM setting

    2. set the default order setting for the item as "Production"

    3. set the BOM version for the item (dummy BOM version but no lines)

But I faced the another problem.

In case that the Semi-finished item is defined as Phantom and it has the lower level Purchase items, it can't be exploded when master scheduling.

I wanna create the planned orders for the lower level purchase items. (not need the planned order for Phantom item)

Are there any information to solve this problem?

    Best regards,

    Yuka

    The explosion should be standard.

The Phantom does not need to be either bought or manufactured but its components do. so the order defaults are relevant on the components. Also on the phantom BOM the  componentsneed the correct line type.

When you create a BOM use the BOM line type to indicate how you want the system to handle the line when you estimate the production order.

Each line type gives a different result.  The Line type field is located on the General tab of the BOM line form. You specified Phantom on the parent BOM, on the Phantom Bom for its components select Item as the Line type when the item is:

    -  a raw material that is first purchased to inventory and then picked

     - or  a semi-finished item that is received  into inventory and is then picked from inventory.

I am not clear what you mean by; "dummy BOM version, but no lines" - and whether you are referring to the parent or the Phantom BOM

In  either case its either a  released version or its not, and if has no lines then nothing is needed to make it and there will be no demand for components..

Also check the order defaults for the components.

I feel there is a misconception of a phantom here - what are you trying to do if your item is a phantom with no BOM and you want to purchase the components - why are the components not in the main BOM?

    Hi Steven,

    Thank you for your reply!

And sorry to make you confuse with my information.

    I wanna realize the followings.

    1. The item is to be managed in BOM. (want to see on BOM)

    2. The item doesn't need any orders. (so, I set up it as Phantom.)

    3. The item is neither for Production nor Purchase in customer's actual operation.

=> But AX need Order type for default order setting, so I set up.

Regarding the cutomer's requirement above, I set up item master data and execute master scheduling, but the error "A valid BOM version cannot be found for the phantom BOM line"  occurred when firming Planned order.

    Does it make sense?

    Hope your understanding.

    Best regards,

    Yuka

Okay, so you have the top level, this I will call PP1, this is a BOM item, it has a BOM which is active and approved at the site. Within this you have an item you want to be a Phantom, I will call this PH1, this is also a BOM item and it has a BOM that is active and approved at a site.

On the BOM lines of PP1 you add PH1 and mark it as type Phantom to explode through with PP1 - what is the site and warehouse you define on the BOM Line? Does this match the BOM configured for PH1 - can you show a screenshot of your BOM for PH1?

I am not at all clear on the requirement  is the Phantom supposed to add any cost to the parent item?.

A phantom is a way of identifying a group of components, either for structural reasons or for admin purposes, but there is no requirement for a sub bom production. E.g I might make a bicycle on a flow line in one continuous order or I might make it as a series of sub assembles to inventory : wheels, handlebars, seat, etc each with their own production order. and then final assemble those on a parent BOM production order. A phantom allows us to set up the structures of those sub assembly which is useful for design but  but tells mrp to treat it as a list of components issued to the parent BOM production order without any need for interim orders. A phantom thus has a BOM. Without components a Phantom has no meaning.

It sounds like you are thinking about a tool or, or a changepart or a reference item like a document?  In which case you can just sue  standard item code with no cost.

Or maybe set your phantom item not to explode so mrp doe not waste time looking for its components.

If it has no cost implications and has no components to pick, and no physical issue  then maybe otherwise just add a note to the bom.

    Hello!

I also have the same problem.

I understand what is the phantom.

But I need to add the bom line which I do not buy and do not produce.

    It is a TAP WATER.

So I can’t use the phantom(

    Сan you give advice?

Water would not be a phantom, a phantom is a parent item with components that you don't make (unless you are constructing it with two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen). Water would need to be a non - stocked item.

    Hello Steven!

If water is a non-stocked item I can't include it in bom lines.

I get error "An item cannot be associated with a BOM if it is associated with an item model group where the attribute Stocked product is not selected."
