FRx Fails to run - GPConn.dll error message

Posted on by 22,647

FRx Error as follows:

****

FRx32.OFSIMain.CheckOFSIConnection

8900: FRx is unable to establish a connection to the general ledger. Verify that GPConn.dll exists on your computer, and that it is registered.

****

I know that I have seen this 'general' error message in the past, but the GPConn.dll is a new twist.

I tried to register the DLL with regsrv but that did not work - might be the wrong way to do that - so that could be error 1.

Of note, this message is received by all users on 1 workstation only - that list of users includes SA

Thanks for your assistance.

RE: FRx Fails to run - GPConn.dll error message

    Solution is at hand.

When something nags at the back of your skull when doing installations that maybe a 'security setting' is wrong.  Go with that.  That tingle is a skill developed over years of pain and agony  that comes from banging the head repeatedly into the wall.

I was working on this with a 'green' network admin and each time that I requested to have Admin rights he was making sure that I had 'local' machine admin rights.

Well they are all the same "aren't they"

After 26 hours of working on getting FRx and Integration Manager to work on 3 different computers, I can calmly state in crystal clear terms that 'green admins' will understand

    NO

I sat with the 'green admin' on line this morning and went over every connnection and when I saw who he was entering for Admin - I stopped him and got to work as Domain Admin.  That is when issue two cropped up.

He said, while when we mirrored these computers from their old windows 7 system they were not connected to the domain, only he created them as local admin.  After which he added them to the domain still as the local admin.

When I finally got to him and explained Domain Admin is owner of ALL he realized he was working at cross purpose - his College Prof once told him that only local admins should work on workstations and only domain admins should work on Servers.

I have since set him straight on this point.

    Long story short.

Connected and logged in with Domain Administrator login and forced the security to allow DomainAdmin to work correctly, we had GP, IM and FRx fully installed, patched and generating reports in 15 minutes from the start of the launch of the GP installation.

Needless to say, we are going to do a factory restore on 3 workstations, add them to the domain correctly, then do an installation as Domain Admin and be functional with a couple of hours.

CASE Closed - thanks for all the input and advise - but not much would help until we figured out the security problem.

RE: FRx Fails to run - GPConn.dll error message

    Bill,

One other thing came to mind after my last post.  You might try making a separate ODBC data source for FRx.  Create it using the classic approach to ODBC creation, we all used to use before GP did it for us during the install.

    Bill -

Have you tried installing FRx using compatibility mode?

I have also had some luck virtualizing applications with VM Ware Thinapp, and was impressed with the technology and results.

    www.vmware.com/.../thinapp

Thinapp can be used for Application Isolation, to eliminate application conflicts that can arise, like when GP 2013 installs an updated GPConn.dll or deletes your existing GPConn.dll during installation.

I really feel for you, and hope one of these recommendations pans out - I am more optimistic about Thinapp than I am about compatibility mode.  I managed to run an unsupported version of software on new Win7 workstations, using Thinapp a few years back, after Microsoft summarily decommissioned XP, it bought me a lot of time to get the client upgraded smoothly.

RE: FRx Fails to run - GPConn.dll error message

Yep, I know that MS is not supporting this - but that does not mean it should simply fail.

We had it running on the platform before we did the GP2013 install - so, what is different?

Hardware did not change - workstations before the update were Windows 8.1 Pro and workstations after the update were Windows 8.1 Pro

Frx worked before we installed GP2013 - we did not install anything for FRx on the workstation.

Now FRX is broken and I can not make a client who is pissed off any happy by telling them that Microsoft says well we dont support that application any more - update to another tool.

Not a pretty picture, not a happy idea.  (not pissed at you - just at the situation in general)

Unfortunately, FRx is not supported with GP2013. Others may be able to assist with getting it working but Microsoft cannot. The supported solution with GP2013 is Management Reporter:

    mbs.microsoft.com/.../MROverview

RE: FRx Fails to run - GPConn.dll error message

Harry, I am at my wits end.

I have uninstalled FRx 6.7 (last service pack) and no change.

I have dragged the GPConn.dll over the Regsrv32 in the system folder - it is registered, but still not able to log into the FRx

    I am stuck.

RE: FRx Fails to run - GPConn.dll error message

By doing that it fails to allow GP 2013 to run.  It is trying to run the DLL as an application and it fails.

    Hi Bill,

Please copy GPConn.dll to AddIns folder also in the GP installation folder and try. Hope this would resolve your issue.

    Bill -

If you have consistency in the naming of the ODBC data source, I would suggest trying a repair/reinstall of FRx on the workstation.

RE: FRx Fails to run - GPConn.dll error message

Ok, I am working on renaming the ODBC in the FRx but I still get the message, after changing the name that the GPConn.dll is not registered?

Is there something I am missing?
