RE: upgrade crm from 2011 to 2016 step by step

Hi Easmoo and Roya (if Roya has not done her upgrade yet), given the significant leap in versions, you may want to consider a migration of data into a new 2016 org/solution.

At each step in version, you may encounter:

    - loss of functionality due to deprecated features

    - defects due to change in how JS and plugins are managed

    - opportunity to replace JS and plugins by core functionality (ex: business rules, synchronous workflows)

    and so on.

The already submitted articles point to tools that help spot certain problems but they won't necessarily spot all problems.

Best to do an audit of everything that makes up your current solution and evaluate the risk that something could potentially break at each step in version. If the risks add up, maybe best to build new solution using what's available in latest version and migrate data using tools such as SSIS w/KingswaySoft or Scribe.

We went from 2013 SP1 to 2016 SP2.1 and I had my share of issues to manage.

Also a consideration is that at each step in version you must do backup/restore/import organization.

That takes a lot of time and requires out to set up a temporary server per major release to do the import org process to convert your org to that version.

ex: from 2011 to 2016 you need to have a temp 2013 SP1 and a temp 2015 server.

    Just some thoughts. Good luck!
