Work Breaks with Multiple UoMs

Posted on by 12

Hello All,

I am having trouble splitting sales order picking work for an item that is inventoried in two separate pallet quantities.  I have a client requirement that results in multiple pallet units to be required for a single item.  This is the result of pallet quantities differing among multiple suppliers.

  • In this scenario a pallet (PL) of item A contains 520 units.  A different vendor sends the same product on a Short Pallet (SP) and contains only 260.
  • In location 1, two SPs exist with total unit count of 520.
  • When work is created, the work states to pick 1 PL rather than 2 SP.

I have created work breaks on SP but that will be incorrect when the reverse case occurs:  1 PL of 520 on-hand will result in work for 2 SP.

Using the FULL feature on the mobile device works as a workaround, but this occurrence is too frequent for that to be a full-time solution.

I understand why this happens as there is no unit specified in on-hand.  The system simply sees 520 and creates the work according to unit sequence groups, locations directive and work templates.  However, as this is a common scenario in warehouses, it seems there must be a way to break work according to the LP quantity on hand.

Is there a way for the work template or location directive to evaluate the quantity on-hand to determine what unit are there based on the LP quantity?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Tim,

As kothanda said, you may want to consider having different variants for different pallet configuration.  What you want to achieve is possible, but you more than likely will have issues with reservations as reservation hierarchy does not consider paletization (unless you use a variant or differnent item id).

If reservation is not a concern, you can achieve what you want using a combination of Work Template and Location Directives, but you will need to keep the SP and PL quantities in separate location or zones.  When the system looks for a specific UoM it will look at a specific location or zone and when it tries to create work, it will use the work template that is specified for that location or zone.

    1. On your Location directive, in the <Lines> section, you will have one line for each UoM (select restrict by unit check box and identify the desired UoM using the button Restrict by unit).  In the LD Actions you will specify the location or zone where the item in the UoM will need to be picked.

    2.  On your Work Template. you will need a Work Template for each UoM; that should not be a problem as you can copy the same Work Template and change the Query to get what you want:

    a. In the query, you will find the Temporary Work Transaction and select the Location (ior Zone ID, depending on your previously set Location directive).

    b. On the General tab, you will break the work using the desired UoM  (quantity = 1, UoM= SP or PL)

    c. Sequence the Work Templates so that the most used UoM is always challenged first.

By default, the system will try to match the maximum possible UoM. So work will be created for 1PL, not for 2 SP. Your requirement can be achieved only if you are managing different item code or variant.
