Depreciation runs for over 22 hours

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hi all,

I have a problem at a client where depreciation runs for over 22 Hours at month end. This is due to the fact that have have a asset register of over 500 000 assets and runs depreciatioin for two asset books. Is there any way that I can Improve performance? (Server utilization is not even 50% thus not hardware/resource related problem). Thanks Ben

Just as an update, I have done the above mentioned (or below i am not sure how this thread will display) and it works great. Took the depreciation run down from 22 hours to +- 5 Hours. It is a bit risky if someone is in the system while this is taking place but can be managed. I have create a job to prepare for the run, then depreciation is run and then another job to finish off the move and indexing stuff.

I am re-investigating this soon and will try and remember to give an update if i found a better way of doing this (perhaps something that involves Microsoft).

I am testing a workaround today, its not ideal but should work. I will be creating a dummy FA00902 table in the company DB. I will then rename the original to FA00902Live or something and the dummy table to FA00902. After i ran depreciation I will move all the transactions from my dummy table to the live and swap the names back. I have identified that a lot of load is on the FA00902 table due to the fact that it contains more that 12 000 000 rows and the indexing takes up some time. I will then manually rebuild the indexes after depreciation. I hope this will help me in reducing the time it takes to complete depreciation.

Have you run the profiler to see which proc is taking so long?

    Hi Ben

This is not really a solution for your problem but an unusual workaround. You can test breaking assets into groups and running depreciation on parallel tracks to maximize the utilization of server resources.
