SQL Server prerequisites for Business Central 2020 Release Wave 1

Hello,

I have downloaded Business Central 2020 Wave 1 from https://mbs.microsoft.com/partnersource/global/support/support-news/msdbcentralonprem20wave1

According to system requirements described in https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/business-central/dev-itpro/deployment/system-requirement-business-central-v16 among the supported versions are

Microsoft SQL Server 2016 Express, Standard, or Enterprise (Service Pack 1 or later).

We have installed SQL Server 2016 Standard - Build 13.0.1742.0.

But when I try to restore the Demo Database NAV (16-0) I get the following error in the event log:

"Database 'Demo Database NAV (16-0)' cannot be started in this edition of SQL Server because part or all of object 'CRONUS International Ltd_$Job Queue Log Entry$437dbf0e-84ff-417a-965d-ed2bb9650972' is enabled with data compression or vardecimal storage format. Data compression and vardecimal storage format are only supported on SQL Server Enterprise Edition."

Please advise how to resolve this problem. Which version of SQL should we install?

    Hi Galina,

I suggest using the latest version of SQL Server 2019 in order to stay up to date with the latest functionnalities.

I already installed BC160 with this version and it's working fine.

    Hi Galina,

This error message is due to a known product issue with BC 2020 Wave 1 and will be fixed in Cumulative Update #1 which is due to be released early in May. In the meantime, you could restore the Demo database to a SQL 2019 Express instance. This can be downloaded from here: www.microsoft.com/.../sql-server-downloads

    Hope that helps!

    Hi,

I am restoring the CU01 database and I still get this error. In what CU will it be repaired?

    Thx

    Hi Stevdeb,

The fix in CU1 did not involve a change to the BC database directly. Instead the CU1 installation media includes the installer for SQL Server 2016 SP1 Express Edition which supports the data compression or vardecimal storage format that caused the error. Therefore you may need to re-install SQL Server Express from the CU1 installation media to avoid the problem.

Alternatively you could install a SQL 2019 Express instance. This can be downloaded from here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/sql-server/sql-server-downloads

    Hope that helps.

    Hi Gerard,

Thanks for your feedback. But I want to restore the database on an existing SQL server 2016 standard edition. Is there any way to do that?

No, as explained you need at least the SP1 of that SQL Server edition...

    Okay,

Now its clear. We'll do the SP2 installation. Thanks for confirming.

    Steven
