Report Writer - Dynamics GP 10 - cannot open form

Posted on by 2,680

The last few days I've been trying to check a field on a form in Report Writer and RW will not open the form.

 I've tried several options and several forms - I've tried printing the form to the screen and clicking "MODIFY" - it will take me to RW (after several minutes) but it will not open the form - doesn't matter which one.

 I've tried going straight to RW and open a form, any form.  First it takes forever for RW to open and then after I choose "OPEN" for whatever form, just sits there.

Is there any procedure I could run to clear this issue up?  would the .dic be damaged?

Any thoughts.

Thank you,

Pam

    You are using a shared REPORTS.DIC file and can not make modifications while anyone else is using the file ( just being logged in to GP opens the file )

    TO develop modification you need to either get everyone out of GP or use a local private copy of the REPORTS.DIC file.

    Same goes for Modifier with FORMS.DIC

    Look in task manager under processes on the server where the reports file lives. In the meantime you could copy and rename the file and then modify your set file to point to the copied file.

    Leslie -

    I've tried renaming the reports dictionary (as per KB850465) but it will not allow me to rename the REPORTS.dic because "the file is open in another application".

     Perhaps that is why I cannot get the Reports dictionary to open and why I cannot modify any form or report.

    SO, how do I find which/where the file is open at so I can close it?

    Thank you,

    Re: Re: Report Writer - Dynamics GP 10 - cannot open form

    I checked my Dex.ini file on my C: and learned that the system is pointing to the server location:

         ReportDictionaryPath=\\servername\shareddata\dynmaicsGP\Dictionaries\

         FormDictionaryPath=\\servername\shareddata\DynamicsGP\Dictionaries\

    I pinged and it went through in <1ms.

    I have a tendancy to call them either 'reports' or 'forms' because the system uses the term 'modified reports' to cover both the SOP 'forms' and 'reports'.

    I've tried opening both types (SOP form, Sales History Report)

    I can print a report/form to a printer or to screen.

    But when I went to the Dictionaries on the server, to look at REPORTS on the notepad, it will not open.

     Thank you both for responding and trying to help me resolve this issue.

    Hi Pam,

    I'm probably being a dunce here, but you said you cannot open a form. In Report Writer you can only open reports. Are you trying to open one of the SOP Form reports? If you rename the Reports.dic file will the report open?

    If it is SOP Forms you are trying to open, can you open a report that is not a SOP form?

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

    Can you check the dictionary pathnames in "dynamics.set" file in your GP folder? "dynamics.set" file can be opened using notepad. That should show which report file is being used (network or local).

    If you are using the shared file on the network, first I would suggest to do a basic test by doing "ping" to the shared computer. You can do it from Command Prompt. Usually ping time for LAN network is "<1ms". Following is an example. I suggest to try pinging few times and see what is the ping time from your PC and if there is any "timeout" or data loss.

    C:\>ping TESTSERVER01

    Pinging TESTSERVER01 [192.168.1.101] with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 192.168.1.101: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
    Reply from 192.168.1.101: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
    Reply from 192.168.1.101: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
    Reply from 192.168.1.101: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128

    Ping statistics for 192.168.1.101:
        Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
    Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
        Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms

    There is one on my C drive as well as the shared network.

    Is the report dictionary in local GP folder or in a shared network folder?
