User classes in GP2010

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Do any of you know if user classes are present in GP2010? We'd like to use user classes as part of our security model for SmartList Builder, but we're not sure if user classes are a part of the future vision for GP.

Well...thanks to Mariano and Richard for pushing my knowledge of the use of User Classes a little "farther".

Starting in Version 10 and continuing in 2010, user classes are not so much used in security.  The new Role Based model is utilized.

User Classes still have several uses.

Short cuts can be assigned to a user class and all user in that class will have access to the short cut.

Some searches can be performed through classes of user.

SmartList Favorites can be assigned to classes of users.

Our book The Dynamics GP Security Handbook explains the new role based security system as well as the current use of user roles.  You can get a copy on our web site.

    Chris,

User classes are still available in 2010 as they continue to support the Organizational Structure feature for account level security.

As far as I know User Classes are only used in SmartList to set visibility for favourites.  When you create a SmartList favourite there are 4 settings - System, Company, User Class, User ID - to control which users can "see" the favourite.  Somebody from Microsoft will have to comment on whether or not this "feature" will continue to be supported or will be changed.

I would say User Classes are part of your security model since they can be used to control access to certain favourites (but not the SamrtList itself).

User classes are still available, but are not used for security.  There is a new role based security.  We have predefined roles and you can also create your own roles.  If you wanted a role for SmartList Builder, you could create a reporting role and give access that way.

    Thanks,
