If you are working with a GP partner, it could be worth talking to them about getting a crash course on Report Writer. A lot of it is just knowing how to get into it, how to find fields, how to assign security to modified versions of reports etc.
Then this forum becomes a great place for more specific questions.
The other thing to consider is using the Word templates that are available from GP2010 onwards. These give a much nicer report layout, but there are a number of "gotchas" along the way.
In the end, the best way to learn report writer is to get stuck in and give it a go.
You can't really mess it up because modifying reports doesn't change the underlying base layer - it writes over the top - so you can always delete and go back to the start.

You need to refer to Report Writer reference which are available out there. For me, I would highly recommend referring to Leslie Vail's book "Developing Microsoft Dynamics GP Business Applications", this is a great asset for learning report writer.
