So we are now a few years into the mandate for enterprise groups to make software run in server core mode. I'm not sure the CRM group got the memo. I can't find any documentation stuff regarding which roles are "supportable" running on a server core install. except that Niran Belliappa wrote "Windows Server 2008 installed by using the Server Core installation option is not supported for installing and running Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2013 Server." However we run 2012 R2 Server Cores for as much as possible.
I run a CRM implementation where we have all of the roles split out to individual virtual servers. and we have multiple async servers to load balance and for failover.
I would really like to make some of these roles into server core installs for the multitude of reasons that MS encourages people to use server core.
So here's my guess at the various roles and what mode is really required:
CRM Role |
Running Mode |
| Web App Server | Core ? |
| Org Web Service | Core ? |
| Discovery Web Service | Core ? |
| Async Processing Service | Core ? |
| Email Integration | GUI |
| Sandbox Service | Core ? |
| Deployment Tools | GUI |
| Deployment Service | Core ? |
| VSS Writer Service | Core? |
Is there any clarity that the MS CRM team can give to each one of these roles? It would seem to me that roles that are services do not require GUI, while the tools or gui apps, like the deployment tool require the GUI. Thoughts?
Moving forward. Nano mode will be in new versions of Windows server for IIS and other roles ... please make CRM work with these cloud-based directions the Server product is moving in.
