Outlook Client - RU 18 - Script Errors (on pre IE 11 browsers)

Hello all,

I recently updated my DEV environment to RU 18.  On an IE 11 machine using the outlook client, I am able to launch forms without issue.  However if I use the same account, and same entity on a machine that's running an older version of IE, I get a wealth of "Script Errors".  A majority of the errors state "Object Expected" and the url is <server>/_static/_forms/controls/img.lu.htc?ver=417016937.

One important thing to note is that I'm opening entities that do not have ANY customizations.  They are just plain out of the box forms (for example a contact record).

I only receive these script errors through the outlook client.  When browsing to these pages via the webclient (using an IE 8 browser) or via a third party browser, I do not get the errors.

Has anyone seen this sort of behavior before?  I've tried going to the system settings -> Customization  and deselecting "Load pages in the most recent version of Internet Explorer".  This does not fix the issue, and when turned on, the IE 11 machines start generating these same script errors.

I have also gone in an tried clearing my temp directory, my temp internet files and also trying a flushdns, but nothing has been able to resolve this.

Any insight that can be provided would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Sean.

    Hi,

I had a check on KB 3005163 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/3005163). Initially I thought only IE11 was supported since UR17 but that is not really the case. Ie8 is meant to be supported. Humm...

Can you verify for us in this KB that all components in your environment are supported?

Were you able to reproduce this error in other machines and with different user accounts?

Just out of curiosity have you tried running the IE8 browser dev tools? I realise the issue only happens in Outlook but perhaps you could step through the lines of code so we could have an idea of what is going on?

If I had to guess what is going on, Outlook for some reason is passing the wrong Browser ID to the server. Perhaps Fiddler2 would help?

    Hi Pedro,

I believe though that the minimum rollup required for IE 11 to work is RU 17, but to me what I'm reading doesn't state that as of RU 17 support for all other browsers goes away.

Also they still list Vista as a supported OS.  I might be wrong, but I thought you couldn't anything beyond IE 9 on vista...

    Hi Grinds,

Yeah I edited the post above after I gave a thorough read on the KB article. I think it is time for you to use something such as Fiddler2 to check what is going on.

The challenge here is that this happens in an IE window for Outlook. Could it be that Outlook is loading the incorrect IE engine assemblies, or perhaps it is passing the wrong browser identifier to the server?

I would also try using the sonoma Partners DeVtools for Chrome in order to step through the JScript that is producing the error.

    Hi Pedro,

Thanks for the reply.  Luckily, last night I looked into my MSDN account benefits.  Turns out I had a support case that I could use so I've opened one.  I'll check out Fiddler2 and the other tool, though if it's only for chrome it likely won't help.  I'm guessing it has something to do with the default ribbon for the entities during load.  It's not fully appearing until after I've clicked through all of the Script errors.

Part of me is concerned that since I can't seem to find anyone else that's having the issues that it is something in our environment causing the problems.

    Thanks again!

    Hi Grinds,

i have to say that the tool for Chrome really surprised me. I know it is not the browser you are having problems with but this a tool that has bene specifically designed to analyse CRM from a client side. It is free, small and I reckon it is worth the try.

Let us know how it goes!

    cheers,

    P.

    Hello Sean,
Since you mentioned that the ribbons don't appear fully, do verify the Compatibility view settings first
Secondly, please add the CRM URL to the list of trusted sites.
Now, clear the Browsing history, cache and temp internet files.
    Restart the Outlook.
Now check, if you are still facing the same JavaScript error.

    Hi Sean,

Have you solved this issue? If so, please post the workaround for this.

    Thanks in advance,

    Naveen.

    Hi Naveen,

I worked with Microsoft on a support case for this issue.  After many hours of them collecting logs/traces, I decided to uninstall the roll up, and then re-install it.  Upon doing so, the errors went away.  So if you are having these same issues I reported, try uinstalling and re-installing.

    Cheers,

    Sean.
