Automatic BOM Consumption Settings and Automatic Route Consumption Settings

Dear 365 Dynamics Community:

I am exploring Production Control module.  I have encountered issues where the BOM (materials) used in Production Order would be issued twice and sometimes six times the quantity indicated in BOM lines.  The series defined in BOM lines is only 1.  When I changed Production parameter settings - under Automatic update section - Automatic BOM Consumption, the behavior on the quantity issued for materials defined in BOM is affected.  Indeed it can become 2x or 6x.  However I do not get the full logic yet of this setting.

Is there any documentation that explains what will be the effect of these settings (or combination of these settings) in the actual production process.  In production parameter there are three (3) settings under Automatic Update page namely

Automatic Execution - Automatic BOM Consumption

Auto-Report as Finished - Automatic BOM Consumption

Receive Purchase Order - Automatic BOM Consumption

And how the above settings impact the issuance of raw materials  combined with parameters under

Start Production ->  Picking List Journal -> Automatic BOM Consumption

Report as Finished -> Picking List Journal -> Automatic BOM Consumption

Same question for Automatic Route Consumption Settings

I have the same question (0)

My preferred setting is the job card terminal with the backflushing on operations + customized report as finished at the mobile device without the backflushing + the flushing principle "Finish" on most of the raw materials.

RE: Automatic BOM Consumption Settings and Automatic Route Consumption Settings

    Hi Pam,

Automatic consumption of raw materials at Report as finished time is often known as 'Backflushing'. (And therefore I assume automatic consumption of raw materials at Start is called, Forward flushing; although I might have just made that up!).

There is some high-level chatter about 'flushing principles' here:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/supply-chain/production-control/flushing-principles

I can think of different scenarios for the posting of raw material consumption:

    • automatically at Start, post consumption of all raw materials required for the production order
    • automatically at Report as finished, for the quantity of raw materials that was required to produce the quantity which is being posted on that reported as finished.
    • manually at any time, as raw materials are issued to the production order
    • manually at the end, once, when the full raw material requirements of the production order are known.

Do you think any of these approaches are suitable for your business?

There is no 'proper' setting. The settings are there to configure raw material (and route card) consumption to work the way that is best for your business.

RE: Automatic BOM Consumption Settings and Automatic Route Consumption Settings

    Hi Rahul,

Thanks for some explanation.  May I know if there is any documentation related to this?  The clarification I would like is related to error on material issuance where my BOM lines will be issued 2x or sometimes 6x than what is defined in my BOM lines.  When I tried changing the Automatic BOM Consumption settings in parameter and sometimes in Start or RAR production screen, the materials deducted will change its behavior.  I would like to clarify it, how to properly configure this part.    I would like to understand the proper setting so materials will only be issued exactly as how it is set on BOM.

    Thanks,

    Pam

these are default when the production order gets processed

for e.g. When and what to consume when a specific step is performed on production

it could be at start of production or end of production to specify when BOM and Route should be consumed

if business need is to consume material at start of production then at start should use the parameter of automatic BOM consumption. You can also specify whether pick list should get created and posted or just get created

    Same is for route

with PO, it is applicable for subcontracted orders when the consumption should happen, typically when the PO is received
