EAM Contoso / Demo data

Hi folks

Recently I have been doing a lot of development on the new EAM (Asset Management) module. There is no data - which is very much of a dev inhibitor.

I have a few colleagues (consultants) who have knowledge about the module - they have helped me to enter some setup data a few times. But now I am on a new VM - back to square one.

Is there a reasonably quick way to get some data in? Has MS supplied any Contoso data for the module? Does anyone know of any data I can get from somewhere?

At the moment I am working through the Microsoft docs page, so that I can do some of my own setup.

Thanks for your attention

How about copying database from your previous dev system? Or moving the EAM data with entities?

    Thanks Nikolaos

Yes I can do that... The reason I haven't - data provided by friends is not of the best quality. And it is also very patchy - something here and something there. (Which is understandable - no consultant has 30 hours to setup EAM for a dev.) But then again....... all the devs have the same issue. So we should probably request it. But then again again again - if my organisation has this issue, then surely other organisations would've had the same issue.... which makes me think there must be some source of demo data by now.

Good quality dev data is important. I suggest you (your company) create a common template which can be copied (as db backup) to all developers. Or perhaps you can copy data from test system to developers every now and then. It definetely doesn't pay off to set it up manually for each new developer or dev system.

It's nice to have Contoso data but I don't think it can ever be good enough for all countries and processes. So it's nice to have common database template for your company or team.

When you create a new D365FO VM on LCS you can choose to create it blank or with demo data (which is pretty much Contoso).

Create one VM with demo data, then you export de DB and refresh the other VMs. Just make sure they are all in the same version.

Anyway, as Nikolaos said, demo data is not good for all countries nor for all customers, you will end up needing help for specific setups. So, probably the best option is to copy data from the test env every now and then.

Nikolaos - I will be pushing this recommendation to my superiors.

Pedro - I am very much aware of standard demo data. That is not the problem. The problem is that the new EAM module does not have Contoso data yet.

I have not been on an implementation or ISV project where the test data is of excellent quality. It seems like that is the case at your organisations. I am sceptic  For now I will believe you and assume the data related issues I am facing are present because I hail from Africa.

The consultants need to test your code anyway. So they need to create test data. Why not start by creating the test cases in test system. Then developers can refresh their db from there. Saves a lot of time and money, and improves code quality -> everyone's happy.
