Need to Restore Dynamics Database everytime Company Databases are Restored?

Posted on by 1,755

I have installed GP 2010 to a new server and successfully moved/upgraded our GP 9 databases to GP 2010. Right now, this GP 2010 server is for testing and we are still using GP 9 in production for the next two weeks. The night before we go live with GP 2010 I will need to restore our GP 9 databases again to the GP 2010 server. Do I have to restore the Dynamics database again or can I just restore the GP company databases? During this restore I do not want to lose all of the GP 2010 user roles/tasks I setup.

Thanks,

Greg

    Richard,

I checked the Tips and Tricks section of www.accoladepublications.com and did not see a new post for a solution for backing up and restoring security information in the Dynamics db. Just checking to see if you were still planning on putting something together for this.

    Thanks.

Give me until tomorrow and I will post a set of tables that hold security.  You can export these tables, perform your restore, then initialize the new tables and import the data.  I will post instructions and the table in the Tips and Tricks section of our web.

    Santosh,

Thanks for your response. I will make sure to include the Dynamics database in the restore plan when I restore the company databases again to the new server.

Is there any easy way I can backup/restore the custom security I setup in GP 2010 so when I restore the Dynamics database I do not have to manually recreate my custom Roles and assign them to users? (I am not using the "Transfer Security Data" feature of the upgrade process).

Victoria Yudin has a SQL script for viewing security resource details (victoriayudin.com/.../sql-view-with-security-resource-details-for-dynamics-gp-10) that I could use to backup this data and then after restoring the Dynamics database I could insert this data directly into the security tables. But I know that its a bad idea to write directly to GP tables with sql so I would rather not go this route.

For the side-by-side upgrade we are following the KB article 878449 "How to transfer an existing Microsoft Dynamics GP, Microsoft Small Business Financials, or Microsoft Small Business Manager installation to a new server that is running Microsoft SQL Server" and also using the standard GP 2010 installation and upgrade documentation. Are there any other resources you recommend for the upgrade?

    Thanks,

    Greg

    Hi Greg,

Dynamics data store system related information like users and exchange rates. It is better to restore Dynamics database as well with company database so your new environment will be update with latest data.

I hope you are following process document given by partners/customer source.

    Regards,

    Santosh
