Email router on NLB system?

(0) ShareShare

Hi dear reader,
Next question arises over here. We have our Dynamics 2016 system running on two application servers with NLB. Both systems run the same roles.
With drainstop in NLB manager it's great maintaining them one by one.

But (ofcourse there's a but), we also use the email router for routing outgoing mails from Dynamics to Exchange. As far as I know, I can't install email router on both servers. Is that right? Running the risk that (beware: invoicing) emails are sent twice then?
Any thoughts on this?

Thank you in advance.
Best regards,
Jeroen

    Thank you, Mohamed!

The pinpointing link was very useful.

I found out that the async service account had to be enabled on Exchange with full impersonation capabilities. Things seem to be working. Waaaaay better than the email router black box.

Aric is correct in that Email Router is end-of-life.  However for your question, the Email Router can be installed wherever you would like.  It does not need to be on an application front end server or a CRM server for that matter.  As for your authentication issues, you can enable tracing on the email router by following this support article: support.microsoft.com/.../how-to-enable-tracing-for-the-microsoft-dynamics-crm-e-mail-router.  This will help identify your issue, but just in case you can reference technet.microsoft.com/.../hh699737.aspx

    Hi Aric,

again you seem to hit the bullseye. I wasn't aware of the fact that the Email Router is deprecated. We're not yet on the December 2016 update, but this seems to be thé moment to explore Server Side Sync, so we don't have to dig any deeper for the NLB installation.

In fact, I'm quite far configuring it. Quite struggling with the authentication method though. If I leave it to references from the user, it works like a charm, but I'd prefer using a more general authentication so I don't have to set 500+ users to work.

Yet if I select "Windows Integrated Authentication", no matter what account I setup on server profile, tests all fail.

Oh well, first steps into Server Side Sync, I guess I need some more googling eeeeuhm binging.

    Thanks again!

    Best regards,

    Jeroen

    Hi Jeroen,

First of all, not sure if you are aware, but: The Microsoft Dynamics CRM Email Router is deprecated for December 2016 update for Dynamics 365 (online and on-premises) or later. We strongly recommend that you migrate all email routing functionality to use the server-side synchronization feature. I see that you are still on CRM 2016, but might be worth exploring Server Side Sync.

If possible, I would install the email router on a separate server/vm than the installation of the CRM NLB components.

In general, email router should not be Load Balanced. Email Router can be installed in an active-passive cluster, so that you have failover.

    technet.microsoft.com/.../hh699708(v=crm.6).aspx

Take a look at the following article, and maybe this is something that might work for you, but I am not sure this is a solution that will work for everyone. It is very customized to suite specific needs:
