Upgrade Help

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

I'm need some help to change my GP dynamics sql server from Windows Server 2005 to Windows Server 2012, that implies that I need to upgrade Sql Server versions too. Can anyone give me some guidance with this? My old server is about to fail by hardware and I need to do this ASAP.

Thank you

Yes the old and new server are in the same domain, I have the same account in both servers. The SQL is already installed.

    I'll be waiting.

OK, then we are in the same time zone. Can we RDP from the new server to the old server or at least directly copy files? Are they both in the same domain? I prefer to set up a domain account and then make it a local admin account to start the SQL services? Do you have such an account? The first thing we will do is install SQL. Please download the SQL 2012 media to that server then on Monday I will look for you to be ready around noon.

    RE: Upgrade Help

Here is how you want to start.

1)Install SQL server 2012 onto new server

2)Install GP 2010 onto new server and immediately apply SP4. This will give you version 11.00.2248.

3)Copy the DYNAMICS.DIC file from your GP 10 server and put it somewhere on the new server. You will use this later to update the REPORTS.DIC file.

4)Launch GP Utilities and let it create the DYNAMICS database and perform a few other SQL function.

5)Make SQL backups on the old server and copy them to the new server.

6)Restore those backups to the new server

7)Launch GP Utilities. It will sense the previous version of GP and ask to proceed with backup. You obviously answer Yes to proceed

    8) After the upgrade is complete you update your REPORTS.DIC file and launch GP

    9) Run check links on the upgraded companies.

The next step is the GP 2015 R2 upgrade. Let's get past these steps first.

In which time zone are you? I could start around noon EDT on Monday. Prior to that I will tell you which downloads to retrieve. Do you get your SQL license through GP? If needed, we use www.teamviewer.com to connect.

Do you have access to CustomerSource? Do you have a test environment?

    RE: Upgrade Help

If you can get to GP 2010 SP4(11.00.2248) you can upgrade directly to GP 2015 R2. You are on GP 10 SP3. If I remember correctly that can be upgraded to GP 2010 SP4. Now do you have a test environment in which you can work? You should be able to go all the way to GP 2015 R2 in two hops. You will upgrade your reports at each level. FRx is not supported with GP 2015 R2. You will need to use the FRx to MR 2012 conversion tool.  Depending on your hardware this entire process should take about 8 hours. Normally when we do these we create test images with the older version of the OS and SQL to support the first hop and then another image with the newer version of the OS and SQL. I normally run check links on the entire database right after the first hop. This may run for hours so start it at the end of the day and then come back the following day and it will be done. Typical scenario is start at the end of business on a Friday and then by Monday morning the updated data is delivered. The other big step will be capturing the SQL user logins and resetting their passwords. For 20 users that should just take a few minutes. The target OS should be W2012 R2 server with either SQL 2012 or SQL 2014. It is also preferable to not be using Small Business Server as the OS on the server. These are just a few thoughts. Having done hundreds of these there are many steps that I forgot to mention. If you can plan a weekend to do this I can make sure I am available to guide you through. The old trusted KB878449 is a good place to start.
