"Variant Mandatory" check on Approval Request for Purchase Orders instead of on Release

Hello,
 
We've noticed that when an item that has variants is added to a Purchase Order without a variant being specified, the system returns no error when the Purchase Order is sent for approval and the error only appears after all approvals are done.
 
Is it possible for the error to be raised when the PO is sent for approval so the purchaser can correct it immediately and before the PO goes through its approval cycle ?
Is a custom extension the only way here to add this functionality ?

    You can achieve this using workflows without customization like this: in your regular approval workflow, add a condition that the variant field in the purchase lines is not empty. This way, all orders with a variant code will go through this workflow.
     
    You can then create a second workflow with the condition that the variant code is empty, so all orders without a variant code will go here. The second workflow can be left empty except to show the user an error message stating that the order requires a variant code to submit it for approval. It wouldn't actually send the order through the approval process.

    Yes, I have tested it before. This control will be made when posting. If you want to meet your needs, it should also be judged when sending for approval. Unfortunately, it can only be customized at present.
