I'm having great difficulty getting the Business Intelligence Development with visual studio to work with the report authoring extension to help build reports from CRM online. I understand that I can create reports in visual studio and connect to CRM online by choosing a CRM fetch xml connection but this does not appear in my list of connection types.
Can anyone explain what versions of Visual Studio work with the various version of the report authoring extension and also the relevant SQL server tools. Do they all work with any version of CRM Dynamics Online? I have now installed so many different versions it is hard to tell why it is still not working. Microsoft also don't have a very clear resource stating version compatabilities. Thanks.

I have the same question (0)Hi jsteelecrm,
For CRM 2016 Report Authoring Extensions you will need either:
1. Visual Studio 2012 + Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools - Business Intelligence for Visual Studio 2012
2. Visual Studio 2010 + SQL Server Data Tools
Expand the System Requirements section of the following page for more information: www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx
I have used option 1 with Online 2015 and 2016 without any issues.
