Upgrade jobs stuck in 'Waiting' or 'Ready' status

If you've experienced the above problem, where, after the 'Launch data upgrade' step in the data upgrade checklist in AX2012, only a handful of jobs complete, while the rest of them sit in either 'Waiting' or 'Ready' status, then I hope this information will prove useful.

I experienced this issue and tried everything I could find on the web, but still couldn't fix my issue. Upon further, detailed investigation (looking through the batch tasks and dependencies to try find the bottleneck), I found that some of the batch tasks were created using a batch group that does not exist, namely 'VersionUpg'. AX creates 'DataUpdate' automatically and so the jobs scheduled with that group have no problem. It requires manual creation of this batch group and adding it to the server configuration. Once this is done, the 'Waiting' jobs will start executing successfully!
