Updating Dynamics Alternate Windows

(0) ShareShare

Afternoon,

We are in the process of testing a GP 9 to GP 2010 conversion and we have several alternate Dynamics windows.

I am manually upgrading them from GP 9 to GP 2010 (applying all changes manually to the new GP2010 business dictionary).

However, we will probably not perform the conversion for another few months.  I want to be running on the latest service pack when we convert.

Will I need to re-apply the changes (manually) to a business dictionary with the current service pack applied, or can I use the Export / Import function to move my changes from the current GP2010 dictionary to one with the current service pack applied?

Thanks in advance,

 Jim

    Hi Jim,

No one else has had a stab at your query, so I'll add my 2 cents!!

Whether or not the modified windows will work with later service packs depends on the window and what the service pack does. However, I would say that there should not be a problem.

For your planning, I would go ahead and convert all of the modified windows. Then when you go live on the latest sevice pack you can check all of the windows are operating correctly. You should really expect 100% to be OK...(but of course we cannot know for sure whats in the latest service pack untill it is issued.)

    Best regards,

I agree with Ian.  However, you did not mention the source of your Dynamics Alternate Windows (which you also referred to as modified windows).  Changed windows come from two sources:  Third party products deliver Alternate windows while changes made through Modifier produce Modified windows.  Yes, they are both custom but there is a difference in how they are handled in an upgrade.

If the windows come from a third part product, you need to get the vendor's newest version of that product.  It will have all Alternate windows corrected.

If you or some programmer custom modified the windows for your firm specifically, then you need apply them and test them to make sure they still function as desired.

    Hi Jim

Are the windows Modified windows (using Modifier) or Alternate windows (using Dexterity)?

For Modifier, just export the package from Customization Maintenance and import it to the new version.

For Dexterity, using Source code control, check the forms into the repository, update the index file. Then bring in a new blank Dynamics.dic dictonary (change the source code location for the original unmodified dictionary) and then update using index file.  It all happens for you.

For Dex, I recommend never placing scripts on an alternate window... always use triggers.  Makes upgrade much easier.
