Not clear about CRM authentication types

Hello guys ,

I am not getting what are different types of authentication in CRM.

Below link explains the same :

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-in/library/gg334502.aspx

But I am confused what it really means.

I have worked on on-premise CRM implemetation in which I log in to my machine and then open browser say chrome. Then I enter CRM url and puts my credentials. If my user is present in CRM then I will be able to login.

It is also possible that different user can open CRM url from my machine just by putting his credentials instead of mine. So which type of authentication is this - Window or claim based.

I would be grateful if someone can provide some help on this.

Any suggestions are more than welcome.

Thanks ,

Om

Hi Om, so the fact you had to provide your ms username and password  to login to crm  is an example of windows Auth, as the user profile on MS AD needs to exist for you to login. Claims-based identity is a common way for applications to acquire the identity information they need about users inside their organization, so the user doesnt need to keep providing their credentials every time it needs to access multiple applications.

I hope this explains things, Kindly Verify?

    Hi Om

That scenario that you describe it is Windows Authentication.

The claims is the possibility to other users domain, out of your current Dynamics CRM domain, can log in to Dynamics CRM.

If you have two independent domains, like company1.tech.com and company2.tech.com, and Dynamics CRM was installed into company1 domain.  How the users of company2 could log in Dynamics CRM.

You will use claims authentication to provide the users of company2 domain the capability of log in Dynamics CRM

Of course there is a lot of work to do to make this scenario work. But one of the ways to make this is using Claims.

The ability to log with different user on your machine, is just one configuration in Internet Explorer, in “Internet Options > Security Settings - Local Intranet Zone > User Authentication", change the default value "Automatic logon only in Intranet Zone", to "Prompt for User name and password".

I hope this information can help you about your doubts

    Best Regards
