Test Environemnt

Hello,

We are current running a tier 3 environment (nav-app, nav-sql, client app). Nav SQL and NAV App are separate servers. We are looking to create a test environment that we can do some testing before we make changes in live production. I'm looking for some help in this process. My understanding is that we should export our entire database from live, set up a new SQL instance on a new server, and import the database. Then from the client app, we can change the company to point to the test server instead of the live server?

We are running Navision 2013 R2. Does anyone have any more details or instructions on doing this?

Thank you,

    Tyler,

    To Setup a test environment

    1. Take a backup of the SQL database (Production)

    2. Create a new database using the backup and name it properly so that you can identify easily it is test.

    3. In the NAV-APP server, Add a new NAV instance using Microsoft Adminstration, Name the instance and use different ports, and for the database use the newly created test database.

    4.  Then open the client using the new instance name and port.

    5.  From the client rename the company names so that you can identify you are in test database, also try to setup System Indicator in the company information to display database and company name.

If you get permission error while logging or if the service stops then from the SQL Management studio assign the permissions the database for the user which is running the NAV Service.

Thanks for the advice, this was what I was looking for. So i have the new server set up and SQL Server is installed. I did a full backup of the live database, and when I went to restore it to my test server, it failed stating the server names were different and it could not restore. The backup file is a .bak file. I created a new database in the test server and then right clicked on that new database and did Tasks, and Restore. Is there another way I should be getting the backup file database into the new test database?

I was able to get the test db imported, but now the instances on nav-app keeps stopping every time i try to connect to it from the client application. Any ideas why?

Further investigation shows that I am now able to connect, as I had to set the right permissions, but the Master database does not have this table in it: 'master.dbo.$ndo$srvproperty'.

I am not able to create it and since this is a dev/test environment, do i need a license? Do i need to go to my MS Partner to get this info?

I was able to fix this by creating a database with the Development Environment. Thank you!
