PO Prepayments do not allow entry of amounts in addition to the item total. It won't allow entry of that plus taxes. Why not?

Here is my theory on a "work around": Increase the value of the item you are purchasing (item cost plus tax) on the PO to get you to the total you need to prepay. Then when you receive the PO using Shipment/Invoice you would just receive the item at its true cost and enter the tax in the Tax field to get you to the total you prepaid.
I've only just started using this feature myself so that might not be the "right" way to do it but it might work for you.
I tested this and I see the problem.
If you have a PO for £1,000 at 20% tax then the toal value is £1,200 but the prepayment amount can only by a maximum of £1,000.
Thanks for the reply Ian. Its that they pay the whole shot (cost + tax) in advance. Without the ability to enter a prepayment > the total item cost, the feature adds no value for the client.
The prepayment amount is a cash transaction and as such is not tax analysed. The tax analysis comes from the Purchase Order. Tax [VAT] is driven by the transaction document and not the cash payment / receipt.
Unless of course it is a financial transaction - in which case you can VAT analyse the transaction once the company settings are set to allow tax details in general ledger.
why are you trying to attach tax to / tax analyse the prepayment?
Ian.
