Splitting Fixed Assets

(0) ShareShare

Posted on by

In working with my client I was demonstrating the process to split a Fixed asset.  In the 10.0.10 version of Contoso environment.

The process is to open the Fixed assets module and create the new asset created, MACH-00021, that will be split from MACH-00023.  Opeining up the SLSL book for MACH-00020> Function> Split asset we are able to generate the journal.

The problem we have is the journal has one voucher with two Fixed assets listed on the voucherSplit-Fixed-Asset.jpg.  This is not allowed and errors out.

Split-Fixed-Asset.jpg

According to Microsoft Docs you must not have more than one fixed asset on a journal.  The Split functionality creates the journal and puts both FA #'s on the same voucher.

Fixed asset maintenance: Catch-up depreciation, split asset, calculate depreciation on disposal

The following fixed asset transactions also create multiple transactions in a single voucher:

  • An additional acquisition is made on an asset, and "catch-up" depreciation is calculated.
  • An asset is split.
  • A parameter to calculate depreciation on disposal is turned on, and then the asset is disposed of.
  • An asset's service date is before the acquisition date. Therefore, a depreciation adjustment is posted.

 Note

When you are entering transactions, be sure that all the transactions apply to the same fixed asset. The voucher won't be posted if it includes more than one fixed asset, even if the New Voucher field is set to One voucher number only on the Journal names page in General ledger. If you include more than one fixed asset in the voucher, the message There can only be one fixed asset transaction per voucher will be displayed and you won't be able to post the voucher.

Has anyone come across this and what is the workaround?  Is this a BUG?

I have the same question (0)

    Hello Stacy Black,

You can record more than one fixed asset in 1 voucher if you already set Allow multiple transactions within one voucher check box enabled in the "General ledger parameters" form.

If this check box is disabled, system will not allow you to record multiple assets in a single voucher.

Kindly check and provide your feedback.

    Hi Stacy,

    Same thing here.

I double checked that behavior with and without the GL parameter for the single voucher turned on and always get an error message.

To me this looks like a bug.

Can you open a support request for this one?

    Many thanks and best regards,

    Ludwig

    Hello Stacy Black,

Is this sorted out or still any challenges left?

Appreciate if you kindly update us on this.

try not to use a single voucher

    Souray,

Yes, it is possible to set the Allow multiple transactions within one voucher but that opens up a can of worms for the AP, AR, Bank, etc. subledgers.  For example if payments are entered for Customers on one voucher and a check is NSF, using the One Voucher is a liability that the client does not want to deal with.

Previous versions would post it correctly with each offset that is balanced.

I will be submitting a case in LCS for this bug.

Currently without the Allow one voucher option you cannot post the Split transactions.

    Souray,

This issue is a bug as previous versions allowed the Split transactions and generated a new voucher based on the balance of the transaction.  Since each of the transactions has an offset, they should have unique vouchers.  I will be creating a case in LCS.

Good news! Version 10.0.23 comes with a new feature, called Create separate voucher number for journals line related to automatic depreciation adjustment, split transactions, split disposal.
Enabling this feature ensures the fixed assets transactions depreciation adjustment during split or disposal or catch-up depreciation will not use same voucher number. In addition to that the acquisition adjustment transaction when splitting an asset also uses separate voucher numbers. Users will not longer have to manually update the voucher ID on the draft journal to be unique.
