Material Consolidation/Item Attributes

Posted on by 63
Hello All,

My company manufactures some products using film rolls as our materials. We purchase rolls of the same film but sometimes in different lengths and widths.. Currently, we have an Item Number in the system for each configuration of the film. Is there a way in Business Central to consolidate these all into a single Item Number while maintaining the ability to track the different lengths/widths? We would want to use the single Item in Production BOMs/Orders & routing.. Item attributes was my initial thought, but when purchasing the material we wouldn't be able to specify which length/width rolls we want to purchase and we would not be able to specify which rolls would be used in Production BOMs.

Any and all feedback is appreciated.

Hi, just to add some information, Microsoft has announced a new feature in the 2021 release wave 1 plan, Lot Sizes. You can also try this feature.
Define lot sizes for various stages of production
    Handling Lot Sizes in Production

    Hope this helps.
    Thanks.

    Hi
As KasparsSemjonovs comments, you could rely on the concept of variants, the support for variants in production orders has been improving, but without being an expert I would say that to further enhance its functionalities, some external applications have appeared that help optimize these processes.
I hope this can help you, a give you some hints.

    Best Regards

Item Variants could be an option, but when producing, you would still need to provide the item and variants for components or finished product.

Otherwise You can look adding a dimension - if those sizes/versions of fipms are more or less repetitive You can add a dimension valie on each transaction - and this way when manufacturing You would need to provide just the item no, and the dimension that will be assigned to the finished product.
