Run-time error 440 - Automation Error - when posting credit card transaction

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hi folks,

Trying to recover our POS from a CPU failure and the POS is crashing when attempting to post a credit card payment back from the terminal.

We are using Tender Retail and the Chase Paymentech Bridge (v1.3.5) with an Ingenico 3070.

RMS hands off to the terminal, which validates the card/account/chip pin.  The terminal says "Approved" then the POS crashes.

First error: Run-time error 440: Automation Error <click OK>

Second error: Run-time error 5: Invalid procedure call or argument <click OK>

These to me look like VB6 errors.  Any clues to the first steps in troubleshooting?  I have tried a "repair" for SO/POS already.

Thanks for the info - will mention that to the boss but suspect we won't change.  We get better processing rates with Chase as well as a small break on bank fees.

Wow, that's kinda expensive.  The Mercury Payments EMV software is free, minor cost for installation.

Are you sure you need to stick with Chase Paymentech?

    Last update, I hope.

We were using Tri City Systems PaymentTech bridge v1.3.5.  We tried upgrading to v2.0.2 and that broke everything.  Uninstalling it, then uninstalling/re-installing MCMulti (Tender Retail), then re-installing v1.3.5 (again) got the card processing working.

Tri-City have since come out with a new version of their software that they say is more reliable and doesn't use Tender Retail's software.  Of course the new software is $350 per POS, plus implementation costs.

We purchased the existing license for v2.0.2 of the bridge in 2014.

... update on receipts.  Merchant Connect Multi is storing the receipts and charging the cards, but this doesn't make it back into the RMS Journal DB

    Thanks Jeff,

No journal entry for the receipt (can't bring it up via query in POS).

Changing the default printer to the receipt printer had no impact either (TSP100 in our case).

Having re-installed the bridge software (Tender Retail/Tri-City Retail Systems) we got debit and Visa working.  Mastercard still crashes the system.

This is making me think it's the bridge software at fault, but it's so flaky (C++ application etc)...

Try making the receipt printer the Windows default printer.

Is there a Journal entry for the receipt?
