Experiences with renaming a financial dimension value

I have a client who is in the earlier stages post go live with D365 Finance and Operations.  They have created a custom financial dimension and entered a list of values using a naming convention in the format "A123".

An alpha followed by 3 numbers.

They now want to drop the leading alpha from their financial dimension values.

In a test environment, I can see that I can edit the financial dimension values and rename it.

A pop up box comes up and asks if I am sure, and explains that it will update posted and unposted transactions.  So it looks as though this is a supported feature.

I proceeded.  D365 tells me it may take a minute or two to update.  No batch job is triggered, but I do see the change has taken effect within a minute or two.  If I look at posted transactions, the renaming has had the effect I was expecting.

I'm aware that anything outside of D365 that has adopted these values for integrations or reporting will also have to be changed, but these arent really an issue for this client.

I'm expecting to have to update the financial reporting data mart and possibly some financial reporting consequences if dimension values have been used.  This is managable.

I just get a bit nervous about making a change like this.  Does anyone have any experiences or cautionary tales?

Thanks

Chris

    Hi Chris,

You are correct that this used to be a supported feature. Recently, there were some issues with renaming bank accounts or main accounts. During data entry of the renamed items in a new journal, there was an error raised that the value could not be found.

Please test if you can enter new journals and make other postings (e.g. sales invoice with the renamed dimensions) without issues. If this is working fine, then I don't see any other caveats.

Update on this - It's all gone well renaming financial dimensions.  It works within the application.
We also have Export to Data Lake setup for several tables.
The renamed dimensions updated in our data lake as well, even for historically posted transactions.

@Chris Quick We have a similar request from our Finance team. Do you recall how long it took to complete the rename and also how did you know when the update had completed?

    Thanks!

The amount of time it takes depends on the number of previously posted transactions with that particular dimension value. The more records that have been posted, the more time it will take, and vice versa.

The process runs in batch (under Process Automation), so it should be much quicker than you might expect.

If you have more than 10,000 posted entries for that dimension value, System breaks the work into chunks of 10,000 each.

@Sohaib Cheema thanks for the feedback, this is really helpful. I have been checking the path the process automations using the path while running the update -  'System administration > Setup > Process automations' but I don't see the job listed. Have I got the correct path for the job?

    Hi Community member,
yes that's the right place to look at, under Process Automation and it runs under generic job named Data Maintenance...
    Look under system managed jobs.
