Unable to access the Tasks Activity

Hi, I am currently unable to access a single Tasks Activity on Dynamics CRM on-premise.

I can view all Tasks, but when I try to click on a single Task the page just loads an error message.

Error

An error has occurred.

Try this action again. If the problem continues, check the Microsoft Dynamics CRM Community for solutions or contact your organization's Microsoft Dynamics CRM Administrator. Finally, you can contact Microsoft Support.

I can view other activities such as Calls, Emails etc. Just not the Tasks.

The steps prior to this I was editing the Task Form so that I could display the Created On field in the form. Once I made my changes I saved the form then published it. When I attempted to view a Task, this message started to appear preventing me from viewing a single task.

Here is the error log:

Any ideas on how to resolve this issue?

Have you tried making a neutral change to the form (add an unnecessary field temporarily) and re-publishing?

Cleared browser cache completely (or use a different browser / InPrivate session as a starting point)?

Hi Adam, yes I have attempted to make a neutral change to the form then re-publish however when I try to view the Task page, which contains the 'Form' edit button, the Error Message is literally the only part of the UI that loads preventing me from accessing the Form editor.

I tried approaching it from the settings. Settings -> Customizations -> Customize the System. Then when I am in the Solution, I navigate in the tree to Components -> Entities -> Task -> Forms.

Now, I can see the listing of the Forms for the Task entity. Task Card form, Task, Task for Interactive Experience etc. But when I click on the Form to access the Form Editor, the same Error Message appears preventing anything else from loading. I tried to de-activate the main Task form, however it says that I require at least one main Task form to be active. So I try creating a New main task form, but when I click New -> Main Form, the same Error Message occurs.

I can access other parts of the Task entity just fine, such as Views or Fields. But when I try to select and open a Form. The Error Message appears.

My only guess is that I'll need to remove the current solution, and import the original default solution which would reset the Forms.

    Hi Philip,

I am also having the same error, I had as well, been editing right before I was unable to enter tasks. I had created a Boolean field I was going to use in a workflow to clone the task. I created the field, then exited the form editor and from there was then unable to access the tasks, with the behavior the same as you have described.

Were you able to find resolution? If so please share it with me.

    Thank you ,

Thanks Philip, I have a case with Microsoft open on it as well, so if I find out before you, I'll post it for you as well.

Thanks for getting back to me!

    Hey Philip,

With help from Micorsoft, we were able to determine what caused the issue we were having with not being able to access tasks, or the forms for tasks. I had created a custom field then deleted it. When I did this, CRM created a place holder for the field on the form in the background, so I did not know it was there. We had to export any Task solutions that we had then we deleted the place holder and the field. Imported a default  solution, then re-imported the previous customization and all is working now. I asked CRM to send me exact instructions that I could forward to you. I highly suggest not creating a temporary field on a task entity as previously advice by another community member. Doing that is what caused my problem to begin with.

Oh great. Thanks for following up. This definitely sounds like the right direction. At the time I had created a custom field too, so my issue sounds very similar. I'll pass this information on to our team. Appreciate the response.

    Hi Phillip,

    This is what we did.

    Resolution :

    1. Create a new solution in the organization and add only the task entity into it.

    2. Extract the solution and open the customization.xml file

    3. Searched the XML file with the word placeholder eg. (<control id="placeHolder_{5FD2BE87-C1CF-41A6-9AD9-4D273733422E}_{b871a45b-0269-22e6-3856-81109d8c7205}" />)

    4. Removed the tag with the placeholder.

    5. Save the customization.xml file, compress it and import the same into the organization.

    Thanks Simmonie

You really saved me. This happened to me in demo with the client and was able to fix it in 5 minutes.
