GP2013 Security

I used the Debugger program to move the tasks and roles over from my GP10 system. I still have user security issues, unable to give users access to company DB's among other issues. I  made a backup of my current GP2013 Dynamics DB which I corrected the security issues. When I make my final company DB conversion could I replace the  Dynamics DB with the backup. Would that work. The security on our GP10 system is a mess.

    Hi Michael,

So long as no records have been added to your production system since you made the back up, it should be OK. If you have added records, you would need to edit the tables of the Dynamics db to reflect the new records (like the next Note number for instance). Of course that db would need to be on the same build number as your company dbs. What problems do you run into when you try to move the security from your backup to the production system using the Debugger program (now it is GP Power Tools from Winthrop Development Consultants www.winthropdc.com)?

I'm curious about the problems you are having. What happens if you try to give users access to the company DB's? We can probably help you with those problems. Gosh knows there's enough experience on this forum with more security issues than you can imagine.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

    Hi Michael,

This is a typical issue when doing copies of GP companies as the SQL users get restored along the data in the SQL database, but not added to the global security of the SQL server itself (if you move to a different server). In case you have it on the same server, then you need to remove the user from the SQL database security before you can give him access again thru the GP user access control... GP tries to do an Add-User query in SQL, and this fails because an identical user already exists... of course it doesn't tell this way :-), so that's why it is sometimes mysterious to decrypt error messages in GP.

Read this KB about transferring users from one GP server to a new one : KB878449 (search in Customer Source for the latest release of this document).
