Printer interaction with AX

Hi Community,

I have come across this scenario where I am trying to figure out how a printer interact with AX, following are the questions I am searching answer for,

1. I understand print happens with Client printer settings but then does AOS or SSRS server also need to have any driver for printer or any idea about the printer?

2. What happens when we print a report in batch?

3. Where can we see the printer queue?

4. What happens when we use a third party client like Citrix to access client.

Please let me know if you have any experience around this and you can shed some light on this. Also please suggest if there is a document around this.

Regards,

Kumar

    Hi Kumar

    About AOS look at microsoft-dynamics-ax-erp.blogspot.it/.../configure-aos-instance-to-print-ax-2012.html

Here, you can find more informations about to Configure an AOS instance to print.

On SSRS side you don't have to install any driver because only Client or AOS can printer a document.

When you print a Report in AX you can choose Print Archive option.

This will just add the documents to an internal queue.

    More info at technet.microsoft.com/.../gg724066.aspx

Finally, Citrix follow the same rules of Terminal Server.

Denis, our system integrators have told me when using print management in Dynamics AX 2012 R2 that the print job actually gets passed from AX to SSRS and that SSRS is the one that actually generates the print job. Do you know if this is a fact, because if its only the client or the AOS that generates print jobs then this may clear up some confusion I've been having regarding which one of our systems (AOS or SSRS) is causing our ongoing printing issues when generating sales orders or picking lists. We're constantly getting a "Settings to access printer are invalid" message during the initial generation of the sales order or picking list, but everything else prints fine from the journal or otherwise.

Update... After further testing I've verified that the SSRS in AX 2012 R2 passes the print job to either the AOS or local client and does not generated the job itself.

I'd also appreciate more information about configuring printing over Citrix/Terminal Services. Do printer drivers for network printers need to be installed on both the AOS instance as well as Terminal Server? All TechNet articles I can find about AOS printer configuration deal with users using the AX client directly, as opposed to over Citrix/Terminal Server. Are there any printing limitations/considerations related to this deployment scenario?

    Thanks.
