any idea If this new nextgen will use a new transfer protocol ? I assume it's a brand new application like AX core, so my real question is ,
IS AX REALTIME or it's scheduled like rms ?

we are now in q2 2014, and no news on SOD for this yet, very disappointing, I fear the small / medium market is not interesting enough
It would be nice if Microsoft communicated with their customers better. My dealer tells me Next Gen RMS or Retail SMB (whatever they are going to call it) will not most likely not be ready until EOY 2014 or the beginning of 2015 for those in small one location environments like ours. I am guessing this is because AX for Retail is optimized for 2+ location environments and would require full blown server(s). Those with single stores will likely have to wait until AX for Retail is hosted in the cloud and that won't happen until 2015.
Would any dealers on here care to let us know if this is correct?

Last I heard, SP5 in December, RMS NextGen or whatever they call it next year, guessing April-ish when AX 2012 R3 comes out, SOD still late, no longer holding breath...

Yes and No. Nothing has officially been released yet, look towards the end of the year or first of next.
The new RMS SOD was to be released in Sept. It is/was late with no new date.
Y'all (slang I picked up in my two years of Texas living) should be watching the AX stuff for more info.
Partners should be reading the 08/13 revision of the 07/13 revision AX SOD. I cannot find a link to it on CustomerSource for public consumption yet. Sorry!

During the July Monthly retail call for Partners they announced they will release the SOD in September. I couldn't find anything in partnersource and I was wondering if anyone was able to obtain a copy or knows exactly when it will become available.
I'm talking NextGen as well, 2 Windows Servers will be required, I'm guessing.
NextGen is AXR with some pieces missing, minimum the Accounting stuff. If you watched the video, there was a Server at the store and another at HQ, its that middle piece I'm not sure of requiring a 3rd Windows Server.

Remember that the current RMS code was written in the 90's and when it was sold to MS in 2002, I've been told that it was spaghetti code.
The code has been modified by the old software team MS bought, farmed out to at least 2 off-shore developers and has some MDR in-house and contract coders.
RMS has been dropped at least twice by MS, once close to its purchase date and again with Microsoft POS 1.0 and its updates to now POS 2009 and beyond. They have finally decided to base it NextGen version on AXR and move forward.
FWIW, my vote the name will change to AXR for SMB, not RMS NextGen.. Spell checkers don't like it either!
