GP Word templates won't print multiple copies

I am having an odd problem with several reports that we are using Word templates for in GP 2013. When a user tries to print multiple copies they receive an error message stating that the file is locked. They are given several options - open a read only copy, wait for the file to become available, save a local copy. Is there a way to correct this behavior, or is this a limitation of using the Word templates in GP?

Hello - Are you able to print the Word Template to screen with just one copy?  From there you will need to print the multiple copies from Word.  Once GP hands off the Template it is created in Word and you will need to create the multiple copies from Word.

I too have this problem. I can't believe a 2013 program would not be able to print multiple copies, that doesn't seem logical. Even when running Macros I have not been able to print multiple copies.

We print several hundred orders a day, and we print a Sales Order, Picking Ticket, & an Packing slip at once. Even when we only print 1 copy of each of those documents, it creates a hiccup.

Have you heard anything else on this issue? I'm curious as to where MS sits on this.

Hey John - Originally development said it was working as designed.  I did a search and found that they fixed this in GP 2013 SP1.  I just tested on GP 2015 and I am able to get multiple copies to print.

Looking at the fix list it is included in GP 2013 SP1

System Manager - You can print only one copy of a Microsoft Word template document.

During my testing when printing multiple copies I was presented with a Word Dialog box asking to open read-only copy of the file.  I had to click Ok to have the other copies print.  The reason for this is we are issuing two or more print commands simultaneously.  The second throws the prompt because the first print job has not yet spooled.  This is to be expected.

Let me know if you have any questions,

    Thanks Andy.

I'm actually in Fargo as well, and was at the MS building last week, small world.

I'll have to contact our GP Support staff and see if this hotfix update is in play. My main goal is to print 1 picking ticket + 1 packing slip the first time I print, because right now it will have a dialog box open and also keep word open. It will eventually print after several clicks, but our sales staff do not like that idea when they do hundreds a day.

I'll talk with our GP team and see what they know as well.

    Hey again,

Back to see if anyone has heard if there is a different work around for this?

Currently we still can not print multiple copies, unless we initiate a macro in word to silently print multiple copies.

The problem I'm running to with that word macro, is what if we'd like to print a document to the screen? Word sees this, and sends 2 copies to the printer and all we wanted to do was print one to screen to look at it.

I've been the GPUG in Tampa, I've talked with multiple consultants from support teams, and I guess I'm just a little baffled that in 2017 we are not able to print 2 copies.

It's been such a headache that the company has even considered abandoning this software for the users.

    - Side note: We did go up to GP 2016 - R2, and I am highly excited that we are able to print statements and email them at the same time - Super Awesome feature for out accounting staff.

This is probably a bit of a rant, but do we know if this is being looked into via Microsoft, or is this still 'worked as intended'?
