If I have an item setup thus
Service Item - product type = service ; item model group stocked
Will master planning see it - I suspect not?

Service items are not considered in the master planning. So indeed your thought is correct.

I have a follow-up question - again I believe I have the answer.
Again with a Service Item - product type = service - when I receipt the Purchase Order the corresponding operation is reported as finished. I have noticed if Product type is Item this does not happen - that is I can receipt the PO but the operation is not updated. Again is my observations correct?

HI CEL,
Yes, this is because the service item on a PO is considered as outsourcing of work when the PO is generated from a production order. So if you receive the service item, the outsourced work and thus the operation is complete.
When you receive items you need to do some assembly or other operation to have the item being part if the finished product.
