Work Type Unit Of Measure different Base Unit for Ressource

Hi,

For job , I am trying to set work type as DAY in a Timesheet, with a ressource which have as Base Unit HOUR.

I have set the UOM as 1 DAY = 8 HOURs on the ressource list page for this ressources

And when I use the Time sheet, and try to select a Work Type with the  Unit "DAY", I get an error  :

=>Unit of Work Type has to be the same as the Base Unit of the ressource.

I don't understand why we cannot do that, moreover, if we set a Work Type with the same  Unit as the Ressource base Unit, we can then in the job journal change the unit before posting.

I have found a solution , that is to set all Unit of Work Type as : 1 DAY = 1 HOUR , and create a WorkType for each. But the problem is in the ressource ledger, I would like to have the "qty base Unit" not to 1, but 8 for hour and Day

any Idea ?

thank you

    Julien,

I am not following your reason why you need to have the Base UOM = a Day (or 8 hours)? The normal best practice and process dictate that a Resource will record time in hours or minutes and roll-up to a full day or 8 hours or more or less. The Work Types do have to correspond to the Resource Base UOM when posting time, since this would conflict. So if a Resource posts multiple lines in Hours then will sum to a days work. Now if you want to show things a Day (8 hours), and you set the Base UOM to Day = 1, then if I worked 2 hours my timesheet would show .2 for that Timesheet entry under the Job and Day.

I think you can obtain the information easily by leaving the Base UOM as Hours, since that is how resources report time. As create a Report in Power BI or Jet to show summary information by Day or use the standard ones.

If I am not following you please elaborate more.

    Thanks,

    Steve

    Hi Steven,

Let 's me explain better my case :

I want to work with a Fixed price project

For one task, I want to configure planning line (Contract type ) with a generic ressource, and a work type.  Work Type will be DEV, because it is a developpement projet and task, and I set price for a day of DEV work Type.

So DEV work type Unit is DAY, and the ressource has HOUR as base unit, and I set 1 Day = 8 HOURS

So I want to have my invoice in Day. => Just create Invoice and that 's all, I invoice some day to my customer.

Now, I want to track time spend by developper on the same task, and work type.

so I was thinking , my dev team will fill the Time sheet , select the project, the task , and the same Work type ( DEV ). => Here the problem, they can't because of the Unit.

Work Type Unit differ from base Unit of Ressource

It's just a usage tracking, because of Fixed price project, the time spend won't generate planning line, just usage.

So, on the job journal, just call the function to fill the journal with timesheet, and so on.

So, with the limitation, I can't set Work Type on the TImesheet. OR, have to create a differente Work Type with Hour Unit,

But in both case, I can't make a reconciliation ( quantity based )  between DAY Invoiced by Work Type, and Time spend by Work Type, based on the Job ledger entry.

    Julien NC,

I thought about this after your reply and was playing around in BC. Here is an idea to accomplish what you are trying to do...

In BC, you can use work type codes to control your job costs and prices. On the Resources card, you can have a general rate for the resource, but for the work type, you can control the rate based on a state they work in or the type of work they do or other variation.  The same holds true to price for setup.  The one difference between Price and Cost is that, for Cost you can make changes based on a new fixed cost or you can get into added dollars or added %. When you use the work types on the job planning lines, this will affect your budget/expected cost.

Setup steps, you probably know this part already...

1.Edit or Create a New Resources that you use on a Job On the Home Tab or Navigation Tab you will see “Cost” and “Prices”

    pastedimage1608762730952v3.png

    2. For different cost options, there is a new option for the cost change: You can choose from Fixed, %Extra or $Extra.
    pastedimage1608762651934v2.png
    3. For Prices there are no different options—just a fixed price.

    pastedimage1608762750017v4.png
    The Job Planning Line

    1. When you create the Job Planning lines for a job, make sure you move the work type code just after the entry of the Resource number. You can see the different Unit Costs and Unit Prices based on the setup

    pastedimage1608762805044v5.png

Now if you create a FIXED Work Type that reflects a fixed Cost and Price, the Resource entering their time can go into the Timesheet and you can create line from job planning action.

    pastedimage1608765434920v6.png

The above pulled in the Timesheet approved for the hours of Linda, 8 hours for a Day. The line is Fixed so the Unit Cost is 8 hours x $10 per hour but the Unit Price is $100.

    Try this out.

Please verify the reply if it answers your query.

    Thanks,

    Steve

    Hi ,

First of all, Happy New year, and thanks you for your help and support.

The step you discribed work well for the price and cost depending of Work Type.

But I am looking to make analyses based on sale ( set on planning line with a work type) , and the usage of ressource.

I was looking for the concept used by Item , like UOM and qty per base  Unit field in Item ledger entry, but for job ledger entry.

The information I want to track is :

Have I well sale ( planning line in UNIT DAY ( work type = CONSULTING ) the good Quantity of hours spend ( usage )  , by the same Work Type ( CONSULTING ) .

I think it is not possible ...

I have played around a lot, and never see some possibility to fill and post some timesheet like that.

    Julien,

I do not know of an standard report that does this but in thinking about the data you are trying to pull maybe you can create a custom report or use Jet Reports to pull the values. I am looking at the Jon Planning Lines Table and you have the fields/values for:

Type, No., Quantity, Unit Price, Invoiced Amount, Remaining Line Amount, Qty. Posted, Invoiced Cost Amount. There are other fields but I was thinking more about your analysis to compare the Planning Line Work Type to Quantity posted and used.

Just a thought and hope this helps.

    Thanks,

    Steve

Thanks you all for your help and advices.

I finally choose to do not set work type when using Timesheet when I want to deal with a FIXED prices project.

So using Work type for price and cost , and it work well.

External analysis will act that :

    - ressource usage ledger are in hour

    - sales ledger will have  the unit configured in the planning line, in my case, the unit linked to the work type.

    - Analysis will be limited to reconciliation by quantity sold by job task , and not by work type.

I have understood that using work type with Timesheet is for :

    - Time And Material Project type ( invoicing the hour spend )

For that, we have to set usage link on the Job card , and there is no planning line configured. The validation of Job journal will fill it in automatically because of the usage link and the Contract line type set on the job journal line.

For a  Fixed price Project type :

Work type on Timesheet are not really relevant.

Because of this is not the work type on timesheet that define the price that will be invoiced for a planning line, you only can use it if the unit of work type  are the same on planning line and ressource card.

In my case, the project always are sale by job task, by day and by work type, and ressource will fill in the timesheet by job task , and by hour.

In BC , They cannot fill by job task, by hour, and By Work Type if we want the work type the same as in the planning line.

    thanks you all.

What is the best practice for over time e.g. for a normal day is 8 hours, but if the person works 9 hours, that extra 1 hour will be 1.5Hrs?

What do you suggest, my only work around is that the resource enters manually 9.5 Hrs.
