Package Configuration: Automation and Complex Processes

So far we've only used configuration packages for initial data uploads.  That said,  how flexible are configuration packages for automating and dealing with data transformation and complex integrations.  Are we better off with a tool like SmartConnect?

I'm curious to see what the forum has to say.

    Hello,

Configuration Packages in Business Central are effective for initial data uploads and simple data maintenance tasks, offering basic field mapping and validation. However, they lack flexibility for complex scenarios such as data transformation, multi-table dependencies, real-time automation, and integration with external systems. They also don’t support scheduling or dynamic business logic, making them less suitable for ongoing integration needs.

In contrast, tools like SmartConnect are specifically designed for robust data integration and automation. SmartConnect supports complex mapping, data transformation with additional features.

If you’re looking to automate ongoing integrations, handle complex logic, or transform data between systems, then tools like SmartConnect would be a far better fit than relying on Configuration Packages alone.

    Hope this will help you!

    Regards,

If it is just initial data, it is recommended to use Configuration Package. When using other tools, you may need to customize some APIs or other functions.
However, after go live, it is not recommended to use Configuration Package frequently, which is also mentioned in MS Learn.
