Moving reports to a new SSRS server

(0) ShareShare

I have a CRM 2011 environment which was installed to a temporary SSRS deployment (long story).  There are custom reports in CRM.  If I use the deployment manager to disable the organization, then change the SSRS path and re-enable the org, I am of the impression that the reports get redeployed to the new SSRS automatically.  Would the custom reports move as well, or does it just redeploy the canned reports rather than move the existing?  If the custom reports would not be moved, does anyone have a good article on how to move all of the reports properly?

Thanks,
Jeff

After a little bit of digging, I found that Reports show up in customizations.  It looks like I could create a solution, add the reports, export them, then import them after redeploying SSRS and everything should be there, correct?  One problem though, we have 12 custom reports.  Only the two that were built on CRM 2011 show up here, along with the canned reports.  The 10 that were built on CRM 4 (or 3) and upgraded to CRM 2011 dont' show up under customizations.

I'm sure this isn't complicated, I just haven't had to deal with this before.  Surely someone out there has an answer for me?

    thanks,

    Jeff

    Hello Jeff,

I believe you are moving the SSRS server (reporting server) to a different machine.

Below is an article that can give step process on how  Report Server databases can be moved  to another Computer.

So that all the reports are successfully moved and run successfully.

    msdn.microsoft.com/.../ms156421.aspx

    I hope this helps.

    Thank You !

Thank you for your posts Oliver and Aftab.

Oliver, I did already know to set the SSRS URL in the deployment manager, what I wanted to know was how to move the reports.  When the URL is set, and the reports are redeployed, I don't get them all.

Aftab, I would prefer to redeploy CRM to a new clean SQL Server, and not try to move the SSRS databases just to get the reports to move over.  It's not like we have a lot of reports, but I am trying to figure out the properly clean and simple way to move CRM reports when changing SQL Servers.

    Thanks,

    Jeff

As also Aftab mentioned, we have moved the databases from one reporting server to another using the backup/restore functions inside SQL Server Management Studio.

Then we changed the URLs to the reporting server in the CRM Deployment manager by editing the organizations. We didn´t need to redeploy the reports themselves. It was okay to have a look at the data sources.

Thank you Oliver for your response, but this is not what I was looking for.

There are many situations where one might wish to redeploy CRM to a new clean SQL Server, with a new clean SSRS server, perhaps even a new version of SQL.  What I wanted to do was to move the reports, not the reporting server databases.

CRM does a great job of allowing one to export and import data, and also export and import customizations.  I expected that there would be an easy way to do the same with reports.  I can export reports as part of a solution, but it seems that I could not get all of the reports, and I do not know why.

    thanks,

    Jeff

Hi, only to share an experience.

We done a move last week, we had reports, custom reports in CRM and custom reports outside CRM.

Reports and Custom Reports automatically had been republished changing the reporting url in organization. Custom report outside CRM had to be moved manually.

    Hi Jeff,

if you just want to move the reports that appear in CRM and located under the customReports folder of the report server where CRM is pointing at you could simply run the PublishReports.exe tool under C:\program files\Microsoft Dynamics CRM\Tools

The CRM reports are stored on the database, you can re-publish them at any time using the above tool or you could re-publish these reports by simply installing the report extensions connector and tick the box that says publish reports.

And as @Axtolf mention above by changing the report server URL on the organization these will migrate the customReports onto the new Report server.

    Hope this helps.

Thank you for your replies Axtolf and Nuno.  I guess from what you both are saying, the answer to my original question is yes, they should automatically get redeployed.  What I now see I left out of my second post, is that I had tried this and they didn't all come over.  In my second post I focused on why some of them show up under customizations and some don't.  The same reports that didn't redeploy also didn't show up under customizations, but I could see them under reports in CRM.  If I tried to run them in the new environment, I got an error (and the report didn't exist in SSRS).  You will notice that the original post is two years old, and we have long since moved on.  I think that we removed the reports from CRM that didn't come over as they were very old.  I also don't know where they originated from.  I've redeployed reports a few times since, and always with success, but I've always wondered why those old reports didn't come over and if there was something else that I needed to understand about moving reports.

If a user creates a report using the report wizard, does it show up under customizations?  Does it redeploy properly like the others?

Axtolf, you mentioned custom reports outside of CRM.  Is it possible to have reports like this that are listed in and run from CRM or were you just referring to normal SSRS reports that are completely separate from CRM?  I'm wondering if that was my issue, because no one knew where the reports had originated from.

    thank you,

    Jeff
