FRx Runtime Error 5 - won't open at all!

Posted on by 245

All our FRx users are experiencing a "Runtime error 5 - invalid procedure call or argument" when attempting to open FRX from either their workstations or even the remote server.  This just happened this morning. . FRx was running fine yesterday.  The only thing that MAY have had anything to do with it is an automatic service patch?

If anyone has figured out why this is happening and maybe what we should be looking for to fix it, it would be extremely helpful!  Thanks.

Essentially those files .G32, F32, and MDB files are Microsoft Access Databases (password protected) and are prone to corruption.   If you are savvy, you can find tools on the internet to expose the password and get into those files to see what sort of tables they contain.  It's actually pretty interesting.  I'm not sure you will ever figure out how it got corrupted.

Some maintenence steps are to Compact FRx System Databases (FrxSys32.mdb) and Compact Current Spec Sets (*.F32 files). From FRx under the file menu.  This is like when you perform maintenence on an access database.  I guess access might store a bunch of your changes in some sort of log or temp database, and this clears that out.  I remember this routine would shrink the size of my access databases back when I used access.

You should do that every so often and make backups regularly.  Because changes you made since the that copy that you restored from will not be reflected in FRx anymore.

We have finally found the corrupted file and restored it. . it was the frxsys32 file . . . we tried launching the report manager and that gave an error pointing to the file. . . now everyone's FRx is working again!  Now, still not sure HOW it got corrupted  . . .still a mystery.  Thanks for everyone's help and responses, it is very appreciated.

Hi, Mark. . thank you for your response.  Yes, all users are still having trouble, unfortunately.  We are being thrown out of FRx as soon as we say ok to the error, even on the remote server, not just the user workstations.  I checked the path listed in the FRX32.CFG file and it is valid and accessible, so I'm worried we may have a corruption issue as you mentioned.  I'm waiting to find out if we have a backup of the system files so we can continue to test.

We've had that same error in the past, but we were able to get to FRx, just couldn't run a report because a file had become corrupted.  There were also permission issues that were changed for remote users in the past and they received that error when the drill down viewer tried to access the I/O folder.  This is the first time we've had the error up front and nobody can even get into FRx. . .very frustrating!

Thanks to everyone for your help, I will keep you posted!

    Hello there,

Ive seent his error multiple times, with varying resolutions. We've had corrupt database files, sysdata issues, connection problems and config file issues.

Firstly, are you still having the problem after the above suggestions have been made? If so, are you getting the error and then being thrown out of FRx so that you cannot access anything off the tool bar and such in the application? If so, then can you locate the FRX32.CFG file on the machine and make sure that the path specified for the sysdata directory is a valid path, or a network path the workstation or user has access to. If they have access, are the files in the sysdata read only by any chance?

If you are able to navigate within FRx and access toolbars, can you check the sysdata location and make sure this is mapped correct. Try change it for the one user and re-map it. do you get the same error?

    Thanks

    Mark

That second response came from a KB article on Customersource that was specific to FRX Runtime Error 5, but you are right that they seem to be specific report issues.

Thanks for your response. . .I am still checking on your first response, I think that is where my problem lies. . .the second one I believe is related to a specific report issue, but I doubt a specific report would stop FRx from opening all together. . .I'll let you know what I find!

Also, I just found this.  Do you think any of these situations exist?  If so, fix them, but if you can't even get in, then maybe you can't tell.  You should ask if anyone changed anything in FRx from yesterday to today.

    •    A Column Header spans multiple columns and either the beginning column or the ending column header range is set to NP, or it is set to X0 and the values are zero for this column.
    •    The Ledger ID is not selected in the Column Layout.
    •    Non-sequential fiscal periods exist. For example, you may have 2002, 2004, and 2037 as calendar years.
    •    A chart of accounts has not been set up.

Re: FRx Runtime Error 5 - won't open at all!

Hopefully you have a backup of your sysdata directory.

First try to browse to that directory and see if possibly permissions changed for it.  Sometimes an IT person will change folder permissions for a folder and all subfolders will be changed as well.  Look at the permissions of this folder.  Users need at least read write but full control works.

If you have a sysdata backup, try replacing the whole folder and see if you can login.  If that works, then there are files in the sysdata that may be corrupted.  Now to figure out how old your backup is....

Also, you are safe to delete the *.G32 files in that directory.  Those are your GL Index files and get rebuild every time you ...well.... rebuild them.  I have this set to rebuild every time a user logs into an FRx company.

Post back and let us know the results.

Am I usderstanding that nobody can get in at all?  Have you tried report launcher?  Or is the report designer?
