Unable to Connect to Store Database

I'm at my wits end, and I am hoping someone has some sage advice on this...

I am in the process of migrating each machine from Windows XP to Windows 7 for PCI Compliance. Each machine is a clean install of Windows 7, and then of RMS. I've copied the same steps for each machine exactly, and I am on machine #4.  For some reason, when I go to connect to the Store Database in Store Administrator on this machine, I get the following error:

Error #-2147467259

[DBNETLIB] [ConnectionOpen (Connect()).] SQL Server does not exist or access denied.

(Source: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server)

(SQL State: 08001)

(Native Error: 17)

No Help file available

The SQL configuration is EXACTLY the same as the other three machines I've done in this store (no problems with machines 1-3), and I know the password and database name are correct. I can't find anything that's any different than the other three machines I've done; It's just this one machine that won't connect.   Anything I am overlooking? Any advice is appreciated!

    Taier -

    Can you ping the server?

Are firewalls on or off? on both ends? If on, do you have exceptions for SQL Server and the SO exe's?

If you are trying to connect a register - install the offline database locally - can you connect locally to the offline database?

Did you configure the Client Components?

    Taier,

Are you running the program as an Administrator? I have found this to be the first item to check.

Thanks for the input, but still nothing:

    • The programs are being run as Admin
    • Windows firewall is active on both ends. I've done this with three other machines without having to make any exceptions to windows firewall. so I don't believe it to be the issue here. That said, I setup exceptions for SQL and SO exes, with no change in the situation.
    • I can pink the server, and can explore the shared folders on the server in Windows Explorer, so this machine can connect to and access the server.
    • Client components? I may be misunderstanding, but I only have a client exe installed on the store's server, not on each individual register machine. Never have. The client on the store server is configured and working fine, as the three other registers can connect without issue.
Frustrating as can be. Last night, I gave up on this machine and started over, and reinstalled Windows 7 - following the exact same process I have with the other three machines, just in case something was missed.  With the other machines, it's been Windows 7, Store Ops (and SQL 2005,) SQL 2005 SP3, RMS Updates, connect and go. I haven't had to tweak any firewall settings. This machine is identical to the other HPs I've done already; I'm at a loss why this isn't cooperating.
    Any other ideas??

    Fun, huh...? Gotta love computers.

Turn off the firewall on the client (the register) - can you connect?

If not, turn off the firewall on the server - can you connect?

Here's some more stuff u can read up on

I would also install SQL Server Express on the client machine (ie, like you would for a register that will have an offline database). Try connecting LOCALLY to that machine. If it won't connect local, problem is on the client side; otherwise its network related or on the server side. Hope this helps.

Thank you, Fernando. The article helped. Much of it was retracing my steps, but in retracing my steps, I saw where I got tripped up. Bookmarking that article!!
